Rest in Peace Tetsuya Chiba (1939 - 2026)
Hirohiko Araki was influenced by his works, with "Ore wa Teppei" convincing him to join the kendo club in middle school. Araki stated that the illustration of Jonathan Joestar's final scene in Phantom Blood was influenced by "Ashita no Joe."
In 2014, Araki recommended his autobiographical book, stating "The characters drawn by Chiba-sensei always feel as close as friends who are right by your side."

As an Italian, I grew up eating pork. Now that I’m Muslim, I simply removed pork from my meals. Yet I still eat with my family while they eat pork. We coexist peacefully. I don’t melt in the sight of pork nor do other Muslims🤷🏻♀️
(P.s pork isn’t all that. I always preferred beef)

it's hard to overstate the impact of someone like Tetsuya Chiba while trying to not undermine their actual body of work, for as much as Chiba served as the influence for generations of mangaka, his work was also deeply poetic and filled with a love for life and craft
Ashita no Joe artist Tetsuya Chiba has passed away at 87 years old. He is known for his sports series aside from Joe, such as Notari Matsutaro.
At the time of his passing, he was illustrating "Hinemotsu notari nikki" in Shogakukan's Big Comic.
We send our deepest condolences to his family and celebrate the legacy he's left on manga as an art form.
