I’ve been thinking about multiplayer games in the browser for a while. Something about how easy it is to jump into a game is really appealing. I wanted to do exploratory prototyping with real-time multiplayer using something straightforward, so there was only one choice: PONG.

Pong has two players and some simple physics, which is a good fit for exploring this space without a lot of complex mechanics. So far I’ve gotten the player movement synced across browsers. You can see player 1’s view on the left and player 2’s view on the right.

The ball is currently doing it’s own thing in each player’s browser, but the next thing on my list is to write the server side code for the ball. I’m building this using Node.js, Phaser (an HTML5 game framework), and socket.io.
