(Spoiler: the President has no tariff power under Article II)
Acyn
@AcynJan 21
Johnson: I have no intention of getting in the way of President Trump and his administration. He has used the tariff power that he has under Article II. He has not exceeded his authority. There is no reason for the Article I branch to intervene.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
US Constitution Article I, which enumerates Congress’s powers, gives Congress authority to set tariffs/duties and regulate foreign commerce. constitution.congress.gov/constitution/a… Article II, which enumerates presidential powers, neither mentions tariffs nor gives the President power to levy them unilaterally. constitution.congress.gov/constitution/a…

Putin believes this for good reason. When he proposes and violates a ceasefire on the same weekend, the US president issues a blistering statement condemning the Ukrainian leader. “The West” is failing because Donald Trump supports Russia.
Newt Gingrich
@newtgingrich24 Apr 2025
It is clear from Putin’s attack on Kiev that he still does not believe there are any negative consequences for continuing the war. The West has not yet convinced the Russian dictator that the alternative to a ceasefire is a lot greater threat to his regime. Until he fears that there is a serious consequence he will continue lying and fighting with stunning cynicism.

Outrageous. Trump is targeting by name a civil servant widely respected by both Republicans and Democrats. And he’s doing so in service of his false claims - thoroughly and repeatedly debunked - that he won the 2020 election. This won’t stop here.

“Chris Krebs… this is a man who weaponized his position against free speech in the election context… this instructs your department of justice.. to investigate..” Trump: This guy is a wise guy. This is the most secure election the history of our country! No this was a disaster.

I am so amused by the MAGA influencers who were bribed to support using food stamps to buy soda to short-circuit RFK Jr.'s Michelle Obama-esque effort to make everyone eat healthy by appealing directly to Dear Leader's Diet Coke addiction. Pure VEEP. thebulwark.com/p/maga-influe…

You know you don’t have to be this stupid. You don’t have to pretend you’re completely ignorant of the Constitution you swore an oath to. Oh, and please don’t let anyone hear you say that this is “a republic not a democracy” ever again. Being a congressman isn’t worth your honor.
I don’t remember voting for any federal judges last November.

If you kept the script basically the same but replaced Zelenskyy with Netanyahu and Trump with Biden, the sudden switching of arguments would be whiplash inducing. I think America should support scrappy democracies fighting for survival period.

Anyway, for those who don't remember 2018-19, the general pattern was: 1) Trump tweets tariff threat 2) Everyone FREAKS 3) Govts, companies scramble to find a way for Trump to declare victory w/out big changes 4) Freakout ends w/out tariffs 5) Trump declares victory 6) MAGA gloats 7) Yrs later we realize it was a costly charade Maybe this time is different, but... 🤷

What makes the silence and shrugs from GOP senators all the more disgraceful is that those cops were beaten in order to protect senators, congressmen, and the vice president—the ultimate targets of the mob—from violence.
J.D. Vance on January 11: “If you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn’t be pardoned.” Trump’s January 20 executive order: “full, complete and unconditional pardon” even for people who beat cops with flagpoles on January 6, 2021.

Not great.
A lawyer for former proud boys chairman Enrique Tarrio tells me Tarrio is being processed for release from a medium security prison in Louisiana, where he is currently serving a 22 year prison sentence after being convicted of seditious conspiracy for helping to organize the Jan 6th attack. The lawyer does not know what type of clemency he is to receive. But he appears to be getting out of prison.

An utter disgrace. A sad and shameful moment for our country.
Per the text of the EO, Trump commuted the sentences of 14 individuals & issued “a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all other individuals convicted of offenses related to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol” on J6: Link: whitehouse.gov/presidential-…

Once again, social media largely functions to allow the highly disagreeable, highly neurotic, highly conscientious people that society once sidelined to band together and punch well above their weight class.

Maybe 5% of society thinks that the murder of a random CEO is outright good. The problem is that they're all on Twitter, where the biggest sociopaths on the planet all converge to interact with (or serve as) journalists, pundits and politicians.

You have no idea how costly this is going to be to the Republican Party cycle after cycle in close races for the foreseeable future. And the GOP used to own early voting, it was a nightmare for the Dems to deal with. A pointless, insane, easily-avoidable self-inflicted wound.
Trump spent years calling voting by mail "corrupt" and "crooked." Now Democrats have built a large mail-in voting advantage in swing states — and the GOP is scrambling to rebuild its voters' trust in early voting. trib.al/8AX9EcQ

Just incredible. Daqqa was convicted for kidnapping, torturing (including castrating), and murdering 19 year-old Moshe Tamam. Look at how Amnesty International describes him below. It’s a sickness.
The death in custody of Walid Daqqa, a 62-year-old Palestinian writer who was the longest-serving Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jails after 38 years of imprisonment, is a cruel reminder of Israel’s disregard for Palestinians’ right to life ⬇️ amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Daqqa was imprisoned for the abduction, gruesome torture, and eventual murder of an Israeli citizen. He was not in jail for his writing - he only became a writer after his criminal conviction. Criminals die in jail all over the world - it is no reflection on Israeli attitudes. timesofisrael.com/israel-rejects…

Fox cuts coverage of Trump’s rally: Even though he’s entitled to his opinion, he’s not entitled to his own set of facts. The market has indeed been going up but it has nothing to do with Trump. There was also no evidence of a rigged election

Whatever you think of 2014: 1) CPAC's roster is now filled with countess clowns and grifters that have nothing to do with conservatism and the organization is being run by someone credibly accused of groping young staffers. 2) After 2014 election, GOP had 54 Senate seats, they now have 49. GOP had 247 House seats, they now have 219. GOP had 31 Governorships, they now have 27. GOP controlled 68 state chambers, they now control 56. So not sure exactly what is being celebrated here, but don't see many wins for conservatism attached.
The power of MAGA: ten years ago in 2014, Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, John Bolton and Joe Scarborough spoke at CPAC. Today, they are outcasts and not invited to CPAC. Conservatives have spoken. Business as usual is a thing of the past. @CPAC
