Canada's Secretary of State for Sport, Adam van Koeverden, joins Hockey Canada in disagreeing with the CAS regarding the reintroduction of Russia to IIHF competition. World Juniors are set for Alberta this winter Canada currently bars Russian teams from entering the country, a different rule when compared to individual athletes. AVK: "Canada maintains, as it has since 2022, that Russia should not be represented in international sport competitions while Russia's illegal and unjustifiable full-scale invasion against Ukraine continues. Canada will maintain restrictions on the participation of Russian athletes at events hosted in Canada that receive funding from the Government of Canada and explore further options to ensure that the Russian government is held accountable."

To all these cynics dunking on the @cohere round; Canada has invested in private entities for years. The CDC has done it for decades successfully in mining, petrochemicals and pharma (TMC pipeline and many others). This is a regular practice in defense and military. AI is at least as important. It's not picking a winner. It's co-investment with the best company in the world @nvidia. Just celebrate great Canadian entrepreneurs doing something ambitious or go back to bed.

Galileo is a BIG deal. Gets us moving away from GPS, the US Air Force system that donates almost everything we do from your phone to banking, positioning, mapping, stock trading etc etc. the US can manipulate it, but not if we have Galileo to check it
Mark Carney say he wants Canada to become an associate member of the EU by June 2027 #cdnpoli Here are some of the concrete examples Canada and the EU gave as what that would actually mean - Canada joining Erasmus+, the students and youth exchange program - They signed a digital trade agreement, that Carney says will make payments between Canada and EU countries easier - They are exploring opening the banking, insurance and fintech sectors up. - Canada is negotiating to join Galileo, which is a global navigation satellite system - They are discussing potential new transatlantic and potentially transarctic data cables, as per Carney

Zohran Mamdani on Abdul El-Sayed: “I think he’s doing a very good job in the way that he’s navigating this race. A race of that magnitude is difficult enough as it is. To have to contend with blatantly racist attacks on a regular basis and the silence of so many around him in the face of that, that is immensely difficult. When we are speaking about millions of dollars being spent trafficking in that racism, it becomes incredibly difficult to both respond to it and continue to move forward and it’s a challenge I think he’s rising to admirably”

I don’t get why anyone wouldn’t support the government of Canada investing in @cohere They religiously give billions, with no equity in exchange, to companies like Honda, VW, Stellantis, Umicore, and BHP. The government didn’t lead the round, they participated, and I hope to see billions more invested this way every year. Beats using our $ for grants, tax credits, and loans with favorable terms to large and foreign owned corporations.

Perplexing, and lamentable, that conservative Premiers’ first instincts are to slash healthcare and education…. …….effectively without any shared logic in these decisions. The two core pillars of civil society…..cut down for no reason at all. @LDoerkson

Cohere Chief AI Officer @joellepineau argues the world's most powerful AI models are often a waste of money for businesses: "Cohere was founded in 2019. Aidan Gomez, our CEO, one of the authors on the Transformer paper." "They made choices of focusing on enterprise versus consumer, which gives the work less visibility. And headquartered in Canada, which has some impact on the early funding trajectory." "We try not to over-optimize on the indexes and to produce models that are high value for money and yet within that margin of the frontier." "A lot of our customers actually don't want to run frontier models. They're way too expensive. They're not necessary for the workloads they have." "We're model agnostic in our platform, so we offer a mix depending on security, cost-effectiveness, and capabilities. We pick our lanes where we really bring value." @cohere

Two points: Foreign ownership in Canadian media or manufacturing should be limited to 49% of voting shares maximum. Canadian corporations that develop technology using SRED tax credits should be required to repay 200% of those tax credits when changing country of ownership.

Donald Trump's actions in Brazil are shameless. Some brief history: In 2022, Brazil's Trump-aligned president, Jair Bolsonaro, lost his reelection bid. He plotted to stay in power, and his supporters stormed government buildings in the capital. Sound familiar? Brazil held him accountable. So what did Trump do? Hit Brazil with a 50% tariff and sanctioned Brazilian officials to pressure them into dropping the case. Brazil refused. Bolsonaro was convicted and sentenced to over 27 years. Then his son Flavio ran for president, promising to free his father and pardon the rioters. On Sunday, he lost by more than four million votes. Independent observers confirmed the result, and dozens of countries recognized it. But the United States did not and Trump falsely claimed fraud. On Monday, Brazilian authorities ordered Flavio to surrender his passports in a money laundering probe. Then on Tuesday, Brazil's Supreme Court ordered police to investigate whether a donor network co-founded by Vice President JD Vance helped his campaign, which is a crime in Brazil.  That same day, Flavio fled on a private jet arranged by a White House official, and he is now in Miami with Trump's blessing. This is all totally insane. Will any Republicans speak up against it? wapo.st/4yQSXgz

What to say about @PierrePoilievre? First elected in 2004 ... YADA YADA YADA ... he lost the huge lead, the election, and the seat he held for over 20 years. Since then, he's treated every day like Festivus, releasing videos to air grievances and show feats of strength.
.@PierrePoilievre thinks he has a “gotcha” comparing PM @MarkJCarney to George Costanza, saying he tries to look busy but gets nothing done in the real world. “Well, this guy talks like Kramer. He just walks into the room every time and says something weird.” @StevenMacKinnon

Cohere Chief AI Officer @joellepineau argues Canadian PM Mark Carney's critics are wrong: The US and China don't have a monopoly on frontier AI. "I disagree very strongly with that premise, to the point that it's why I decided to join Cohere." "Building for the frontier is a choice. There's enough circulation of talent between Cohere and the other frontier labs that the recipe is reasonably well known." "The main blocker on compute is access to capital. And then it's talent, and we have a phenomenal pool of talent in Canada anchored in Mila, Vector, and others." "It's hard work to build frontier models. Every day you've got to hustle to get access to the compute and make the right technical choices. You can't afford to take a wrong turn in your training strategy." @cohere
