HR told me never to open an email from the company’s legal department. Then one arrived with my name in the subject line.
I’d worked at the company for six years, and I’d never been in trouble. So when an email appeared at 9:06 a.m. titled “Confidential: Investigation Involving [My Name],” my stomach dropped.
I remembered HR’s warning from three months earlier.
“If legal ever contacts you directly, notify us first. Don’t open anything.”
But why would the legal department be investigating me?
I opened it.

Ever since I started dating my girlfriend, she always insisted that we use a condom whenever we were intimate. I thought she was simply being careful, but later discovered she has STDs.
One night, while we were lying together, I decided to ask her.
Me: “Baby, can I ask you something?”
Girlfriend: “Sure. What's wrong?”
Me: “Why do you always insist on using a condom? We've been together for months now.”
She looked at me.
Girlfriend: “What's wrong with using protection?”
Me: “Nothing. I'm just asking why you're so worried about it.”
Girlfriend: “I'm not worried. I'm simply not ready to risk anything yet.”
Me: “Risk what? Are you afraid of getting pregnant?”
Girlfriend: “Pregnancy is one thing. There are other things people need to be careful about.”
I laughed.
Me: “You make it sound like I'm a stranger you met yesterday.”
Her expression changed.
Girlfriend: “Please don't make this an argument. If you love me, respect my decision.”
I kept quiet, but the question stayed in my mind.
A few weeks later, I brought it up again.
Me: “Baby, don't you trust me by now?”
Girlfriend: “I do.”
Me: “Then why does it feel like you're hiding something from me?”
She sat up on the bed.
Girlfriend: “I'm not hiding anything. I just want us to be careful.”
Me: “For how long? We've been together long enough to talk about these things honestly.”
Girlfriend: “When I'm ready, I'll tell you.”
I didn't want to pressure her, so I let the matter rest.
But one night, after she insisted on using a condom again, I finally lost my patience.
Me: “I'm tired of having this same conversation. If we're going to be together, I want us to be honest with each other.”
She stared at me for a long time.
Then she whispered something I never expected to hear.
Girlfriend: “There's a reason I've been insisting on protection.”

My boss accidentally shared his screen during a Zoom meeting, exposing an Excel sheet titled "Q4 Termination Logistics." My name was at the very top of the list, highlighted in red and marked for a "performance-based" layoff effective this coming Friday.
I sat frozen, staring at my webcam, trying to keep my face completely blank while he continued reviewing the budget numbers as if nothing was wrong.
Boss: “Alright team, we need to ensure maximum efficiency over the next forty-eight hours. No mistakes.”
Me: “Understood. The cloud migration is on track for Thursday morning.”
Boss: “Excellent. We're counting on you.”
I’ve been working eighty-hour weeks for nine months, destroying my mental health to hit this deployment deadline.

At work, I was the kind of person who believed in doing my job and going home.
I greeted everyone, helped when I could, and never had a problem with anyone. But I also refused to pretend that everything was fine when it wasn’t.
One Monday morning, my supervisor asked me to stay late to help finish a report that had been delayed because a colleague hadn’t submitted their part.
I had already worked late twice that week.
So I politely said, “I can finish my own section tomorrow, but I can’t stay late tonight.”

The visa officer asked my mother why she wanted to visit the United States.
“My son is getting married,” she replied. “I want to be there for his wedding.”
“How long do you intend to stay?”
“Two weeks. I have a job and a home to return to.”
The officer checked her documents before asking, “Your son has offered to pay for your entire trip. Why are you only staying for two weeks?”
“Because I cannot abandon my responsibilities here just because my son is getting married.”
The officer looked at her again.
“Wouldn’t a mother want to spend more time with her son, especially after being apart for so long?”
My mother smiled sadly.
“Of course. But love doesn’t mean I can leave everything behind whenever I want.”
The interview continued, and she came home without knowing whether her visa would be approved.
That evening…
Visa Officer: “Why do you want to travel to the United States?”
Applicant: “My daughter is graduating from college. She’s been asking me to come for two years.”
Visa Officer: “How long do you plan to stay?”
Applicant: “Ten days. I have a business to return to.”
Visa Officer: “Who is paying for the trip?”
Applicant: “I am.”
Visa Officer: “Your daughter sent you money last month. What was that for?”
Applicant: “She helped me pay for the flight.”
Visa Officer: “You just said you’re paying for the trip.”
Applicant: “I am paying for the hotel and my other expenses. She offered to help with the ticket.”
The officer looked at the documents again.
Visa Officer: “If your daughter can afford to help you travel, why can’t she pay for the entire trip?”
Applicant: “Because I didn’t raise her to be responsible for every expense I have.”
The officer stopped typing……
