AS FEARED: "The world’s clouds are changing. They are covering less overall area and are dimming, with the effect that they reflect less solar radiation back into space. This increase in solar absorption is a major cause of the accelerating warming we are now experiencing."
Great piece by Tom Harris on cloud feedback The world's cloud cover is reducing, which makes the planet hotter This may be why Miocene Climatic Optimum temperatures were 7 - 8C up on pre-industrial for CO2 levels of just 400 - 600ppm Very, very, scary substack.com/home/post/p-220…

Antarctic’s ‘doomsday’ Thwaites glacier is melting twice as fast as scientists believed, a new study shows. It is expected eventually to raise sea levels two feet by itself, and could unleash other melting that could bring them up a full 10 feet. edition.cnn.com/2026/10/15/c…

1/5 The massive Yandex outages following recent drone strikes on Russian data centers have triggered a noticeable shift online. While many celebrated a "drop in bot traffic," the reality is far more nuanced. Here is how it actually impacts Russian influence ops. 👇

📝 New article on Our World in Data: A 73% average decline in wildlife populations: an overview of the 2026 Living Planet Index report. The 2026 Living Planet Index report is published today. As with previous additions, it can make for a depressing read. The headline is a 73% average decline in wildlife populations since 1970. Declines in global biodiversity are extremely concerning, but many of the news headlines you’ll see today will probably report this latest result incorrectly. At least they have in previous years. Some may report that the world has lost “73% of animal populations since 1970” or “73% of species are in decline”. Neither of these is correct, and the report’s authors go to great lengths to stress this. Instead, the Living Planet Index captures the average decline in population numbers across almost 36,000 populations. These changes are then averaged using a geometric mean and given different weightings in the final index. It’s a bit more complicated than a “we’ve lost 73% of wildlife” headline might suggest. When we dig beneath the headline number, we find that around half of the studied populations have declined, but just as many have either increased or remained stable. In this article, we look at what the Living Planet Index does and doesn’t capture, and what’s changed since the last report.

Authoritative Swiss study: Switzerland lost 20% of its ice in just 5 years >Melt rates 2 times any prior 5-year period >Record-hot summer (+3.4°C vs 1991-2020) erased winter snow even above 3,300m (~10,800 ft) >The July to September melt was 2.2 trillion liters, over 4 times the yearly drinking water of all Swiss households >Even worse: meltwater likely peaked: 2026 released less water than 2003 despite faster melt >Unchecked warming could erase over 90% of Alpine ice by 2100, straining hydropower, river flows and mountain stability The Alps are just the preview: Central Europe lost 39% of its glacier ice in 2000-23 vs 5% globally Every 0.1°C counts: Act on climate NOW aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/2…

The world faces two energy problems: hundreds of millions lack access to energy, and most of our energy still produces greenhouse gas emissions. The first energy problem of the world is the problem of energy poverty. People in very poor countries have very low emissions. The reason that the emissions of the poor are low is that they lack access to modern energy and technology. When people lack access to modern energy sources for cooking and heating, they rely on solid fuel sources — mostly firewood, but also dung and crop waste. This comes at a massive cost to the health of people in energy poverty. The reliance on fuelwood is also the reason why poverty is linked to deforestation. The second energy problem is the one that is more well-known: greenhouse gas emissions are too high. The problem is larger for the extremely rich, but it is not limited to them. People need access to energy for a good life. However, in a world where fossil fuels are the dominant source of energy, access to modern energy means that carbon emissions are too high. Once we look at it this way, it becomes clear that the twin energy problems are really the two sides of one big problem. We lack large-scale energy alternatives to fossil fuels that are cheap, safe, and sustainable. Until we scale up those alternatives, the world will continue to face the two energy problems of today.

Devastating glacier loss in Switzerland in the extreme year 2026 - 5.5% of the remaining ice is gone! I'm still struggling to grasp the extent of this decline. This loss almost catches up with the record-shattering year 2022: too little snow in winter and intense heat @glamos_ch

Paul Krugman just shared this in his recent post.
Railways 1845. Utilities 1929. Japan 1989. Dotcom 2000. Shale 2014. Same order each time: stocks peak, capex keeps rising for another 6-24 months, then rolls over. The trigger was usually a central bank.
