The statistics of early-onset colorectal cancer are sobering but I always find narrative more humanizing than numbers so let's put a face to this scourge
Brinlee (here👇with her husband Parker and some middle-aged oncologist) was 21 when she first experienced hematochezia

My sister @twzoe is an amazing PCP, who’s leading an effort to unionize physicians to have a collective voice to advocate for more support in primary care, one of the toughest specialties in medicine #SGIM #proudtobeGIM #primarycare
The unionizing effort is part of a flurry of labor organizing by attending physicians and doctors in training at several large health systems in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. trib.al/gACOVgT

On rounds at Grady
Me: "How're you feeling today?"
Him: "Well. I been better. That medicine y'all gave me made me run off!"
My team looked puzzled.
I did not.
Me: "Oh no! You talking 'bout the medicine we gave you for your gout flare up?"
Him: "Yeah! That one!"

"It started with a little bit of blood with my bowel movements. Not consistent either. I had no pain, no weight loss and even my bloodwork was normal. My amazing primary care team decided to air on the side of caution.
During my first ever GI visit, we discussed the possibility of diverticulitis, Crohn’s, and hemorrhoids, which I had never had and figured this came along with being in my 40’s. At the bottom of the list was the possibility of a ‘hemorrhaging neoplasm’.
3 weeks later, I had my colonoscopy. When I woke up, a nurse brought my husband back and my doctor told us I had cancer. At 43, I quit my job and put all my focus in fighting stage III colorectal cancer.
After infusion chemotherapy, radiation, oral chemotherapy and surgery, I am officially NED. I have one last surgery to reverse my ileostomy and reconnect my colon. After that, I’m home free.
It’s important to know this isn’t an old person’s diagnosis. My oncologist told us that I probably had this cancer for 7-10 years. Don’t brush off the signs and certainly get your colonoscopy sooner rather than later." - Jennifer B.

Was trying to pick b/w two appetite stimulants at work & remembered Pubmed PICO, a good way to quickly find evidence comparing therapies for a given condition. Figured I’d make a video to share with learners & others honing their practice-based learning. tiktok.com/t/ZT8xmk427/
