A little more than 3 years ago found a singer with the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
That singer lead me to @jockowillink and his powerful message about discipline.
I am forever grateful @danvasc2

"All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom. True religion is real living; living with all one's soul, with all one's goodness and righteousness. My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind."
- Albert Einstein, Out of My Later Years
In need of a little peace and beauty, here it is. Enjoy β€οΈ

"...I was numb when it started
Didn't know what I felt
Now the weight that I carry
Is the hand I was dealt
There's a light I should follow
Though it flickers ahead
Should I know where it's leading
Should I go there instead..."

There is an innocence you can't recover once you begin seeing beneath things.
You hear the compliment and notice the motive.
You see the success and recognize the sacrifice behind it.
You watch people condemn in others what they secretly permit in themselves.
You begin noticing how much of civilization depends upon everyone agreeing not to look too closely.
And know knowledge has a cruel property:
You can't unknow.
Once you understand how approval manipulates, applause sounds different.
Once you understand mortality, wasted years look different.
Once you understand desire, luxury looks different.
Once you understand yourself, your excuses sound different.
Every truth closes a door back into innocence.
This is why great awareness can initially feel like destruction.
You lose simple explanations.
Good people reveal vice.
Bad people reveal wounds.
Success reveals emptiness.
Pleasure reveals dependence.
Even you own virtue reveals traces of ego.
The world does not necessarily become darker, your eyes simply become harder to deceive.
But here lies the trap:
The person who sees through everything can begin believing they are above everything.
Understanding becomes cynicism.
Discernment becomes suspicion.
Solitude become superiority.
Soon they pride themselves on seeing corruption everywhere, without noticing the pride corrupting the person who sees it.
This is not wisdom, it is another form of blindness.
The Stoics demanded something much harder.
See clearly without becoming bitter.
Marcus Aurelius knew people would be selfish, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, and difficult.
Yet his conclusion was not:
Therefore despise humanity.
It was:
They act from their understanding of good and evil.
See the fault.
Understand its cause.
Then guard yourself from becoming another example of it.
Perhaps this is why deep understanding can become lonely.
Certain conversations no longer satisfy you.
Certain ambitions stop impressing you.
Certain crowds require pretending not to notice what you can no longer ignore.
But solitude itself is not proof of wisdom, the question is what your solitude is producing.
Contempt or character?
There are two people who discover the world is imperfect.
One become bitter:
"Everything is corrupt."
The other one become responsible:
"Then let me contribute less corruption."
One uses knowledge to justify withdrawal and the other uses knowledge to refine conduct.
They saw the same darkness but only one learned how to carry a lamp.
That my be the final test of intelligence.
Not whether you can expose the contradictions of the world.
And sharp mind can eventually learn to tear things apart.
The harder achievement is to understand human weakness without hating humanity.
To see life without illusion and understand suffering without surrendering to despair.
The Ancient philosophers did not pursue wisdom because they believed knowledge would make life more pleasant. They pursued it because a painful truth was preferable to a comfortable slavery.
But the Stoics goes one step further.
After stripping away illusion, it asks:
"Now that you see more clearly, what kind of person will you become because of what you see?"
Because seeing through the world is not the highest form of wisdom.
Remaining good after you have seen through it might be.
