This week, I met with Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau to highlight how Islamophobia, and its intersections with anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab racism, continues to harm our social fabric, undermines pluralism and poses a direct threat to our democracy. As we have been witnessing, international conflicts have direct impacts here at home. Canadian Muslims of Palestinian and Lebanese descent continue to suffer devastating impacts of the ongoing violence, war, and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Lebanon. This remains top of mind for many in our communities who continue to urge the Canadian government to do more to save innocent lives and defend international humanitarian law. While the federal government has taken important steps towards addressing racism and hate in Canada, including proposed online harms legislation, as well as through the recently launched Canada Action Plan on Combatting Hate, including needed and welcomed enhancements to the Canada Community Security Program, and Canada’s new Anti-Racism Strategy, there are widespread concerns that Islamophobia and other forms of hate continue to increase. The devaluation and dehumanization of Palestinian and Lebanese lives have a direct impact in Canada, leaving many Canadian Muslims and others feeling a pronounced sense of exclusion, a sense of second-class citizenship, and vulnerability for themselves and for their children. Palestinian and Muslim identities continue to be frequently and unfairly associated with terrorism in public discourse, both online and offline. This is impacting Canadian Muslims and many others in their schools, workplaces, and in their wider communities where there have been documented reports of harassment, reprisals, hate crimes, and other harmful repercussions. A feature of a growing climate of division is the deliberate efforts to silence voices peacefully calling for the application of international humanitarian law, deeply shaking confidence in our civil liberties and in governmental and institutional commitments towards fairness, equity, and inclusion. Through a series of roundtables across Canada, members of Parliament and my Office heard clearly that exclusion and erasure that are being reported by our communities, including among youth, are in part due to a lack of federal acknowledgement of anti-Palestinian racism. I welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment on adopting a definition of anti-Palestinian racism to describe the bias and discrimination far too many Canadian Palestinians are experiencing. Furthermore, I outlined how I have been working with my team to fulfill the mandate, including providing training for federal employees on Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab racism, as well as providing policy advice on key files. These have included guidance on Employment Equity, Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy, Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate, Online Harms legislation, special immigration measures to support Gazans and Sudanese fleeing war, and extensive public consultation and engagement to raise awareness on Islamophobia. I reiterated my commitment to continuing to understand the preoccupations, fears, and aspirations of Muslim communities in Canada. This is to inform my ongoing engagement with the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, the federal government and with Canadians from coast to coast to coast. I remain hopeful that we can overcome the significant challenges we continue to face at a time of unimaginable despair, division, and anxiety and assure Canadian Muslims, Arabs and Palestinians that they, and their children, fully belong in Canada.🍁 ➡️canada.ca/en/canadian-herita…

We are aware of an incident at a Mosque in the Scarborough area. A man entered and uttered Islamophobic, racist, and anti-Palestinian slurs and threats against those inside, including worshippers, teachers and students. The congregants are shaken, but no one is hurt. We are in contact with all parties on the ground about this incident, one of many that has swept Canada in the past year. Our mosques are supposed to be places of peace and safety, particularly for children and the elderly. Yet such incidents have become almost commonplace. It is time for our leaders to produce a real plan to address this ever growing pattern of Islamophobia. We will have more to say as the situation evolves.

In criticizing @UWindsor's principled agreement with the student-led Palestine encampment, the Windsor Jewish Federation's VP said “I think the only thing that wasn’t mentioned was using Sharia law as the law of the university.” This racist, Islamophobic joke is despicable.

Once again, these charges being dropped on people expressing their solidarity with Palestinians under genocide, is an evidence that they shouldn’t have been initiated to start with and that many charges are pushed forward to please some Israeli lobby groups
Pleased that the AB Crown Prosecution has WITHDRAWN charges against my client, who (strangely) was charged after she had been thrown to the ground and later had her hijab pulled off. calgary.citynews.ca/2023/11/…

This witch hunt is about more than just Birju Dattani. Pro-Israel groups are trying to make it a disqualifying offence to criticize racist Israeli practices. Justice This is an absurd and dangerous request which @viraniarif must soundly reject. cjpme.org/pr_2024_07_05_chrc…

CJPME is concerned that @Safety_Canada is likely to continue to engage with Itamar Ben-Gvir under the terms of the Canada-Israel Strategic Partnership. The Public Safety Canada website even appears to identify Ben-Gvir as a key contact under "International Partners." We are requesting full disclosure of the nature of this relationship and seeking assurances that all ties with Ben-Gvir and his Ministry will be cancelled. cjpme.org/letter_2024_07_05_…

Read this new op-ed by NCCM Writer Steven Zhou that touches on the dangers of unchecked Islamophobic rhetoric, particularly from those who have been generating clicks and dollars from such content. We know where such rhetoric leads. We have seen how deadly the consequences can be. There should be no tolerance or support for these platforms. Our elected officials must stand up against the business models of hate. thestar.com/opinion/contribu…

Canada must not fund war crimes in Palestine. Together with @IndJewishVoices (IJV), we called on the Liberal Government to immediately investigate and shut down 'charities' who funnel Canadian tax dollars to promote the colonization of Palestinian land.

One way Palestine is erased is by omission. Many outlets refuse to call it by its name unless it is part of a quote. In Canada, "Israel" has been said ~6 times more than "Palestine" across the media in 2024.

NCCM CEO Stephen Brown and Professor Nadia Hasan of York University have penned this piece to highlight the latest NCCM report on Bill 21 and its impact on Quebec Muslim women's employment and overall well-being. The report shows for the first time that a majority of Muslim women in Quebec are willing to leave the province in order to escape the second-class citizenship that Bill 21 forces them into. This would lead to billions of dollars in lost income for Quebec. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…

At the same time as students are calling on their universities to divest from genocide and cut ties with complicit Israeli institutions, McGill, UdM, and Concordia have joined a new "Quebec-Israel Universities Entrepreneurship Fund." Shame on them!
3 Quebec universities partner with Ben Gurion University in Israel. This week, they launched the Quebec-Israel Universities Entrepreneurship Fund "to encourage joint activities between BGU and Quebec universities" and to "add a new dimension in Quebec-Israel relations"
