This isn’t intended at a dig at Wisden, but does anyone really want to hear more about the growth of franchise tournaments? It’s all we ever seem to hear about. Frankly, I’d love to hear a less about it.
In the new edition of Wisden Cricket Monthly, out now, Matthew Hayden discusses the growth of franchise tournaments around the world. Order your copy here 👇 Print: thenightwatchman.net/shop/wi… Digital: pocketmags.com/wisden-cricke…

🚨 NEW ANALYSIS! Our latest modelling finds that without urgent action on the cost of living, this will still be the worst parliament on record for living standards. Our analysis shows that households across the income spectrum will suffer the hit 👇

Donald MacLeod's picture of the remarkable then 82-year-old Alex Steele keeping wicket for Rossie Priory against The XL Club was shortlisted in the amateur category of the 2022 Wisden Photograph of the Year competition. Steele, who played 14 first-class matches for Scotland between 1967 and 1980, has idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis which necessitates him carrying an oxygen tank. He manages about ten overs at a time. He has since been awarded the MBE and was still playing in 2026

This is also an admission that last few governments failed to do the work everyone agreed was urgent after the last time they had to do this. They could have built the data architecture to enable much better targeting. But clearly didn’t. So we’re stuck still with the choice…
NEWS ENERGY PAYMENT: £100 payment to all households in Council Tax bands A to D for England (and funding for same in other nations). That's 20m homes. Translation: This is the support for the huge rise due in January price cap. Its expected to be 27% up. Which equates to roughly £100 from Jan to March alone.

Often called Old Man’s Beard it is exceptionally sensitive to air pollution, so their presence on Hangman indicates high air quality & clean air in the local #environment. #Lichen is a symbiotic partnership between a fungus & an alga working together.

In an ideal world yes. But in terms of priorities I prefer the government to focus its attention on bringing the water industry into public ownership, rather than a letter delivery service which will have less and less relevance to our daily lives with every passing decade.
Royal Mail should be back in public hands. After years of missed delivery targets, Royal Mail has proven it can’t be run effectively by the private sector. That’s why I’ve called on the Government to renationalise it. If we fail to act, we risk losing Royal Mail for good.

2 of Reform UK's 8 MPs were invited to ask questions at today's #PMQs. That's 25% of their parliamentary party. Has such a large proportion of a party with 8 or more members ever been given such a loud voice at a single #PMQs? Not very anti-establishment, is it?

A single mature tree can be 50, 80, even 100 years old—quietly building a world for birds, insects, fungi, and mammals. In minutes, modern machines erase decades of growth. What took nature a lifetime to create, we destroy in a heartbeat. 🌳💔

In May 1994 Westow CC in North Yorkshire featured in a number of national newspapers as their ground was pictured surrounded on three sides by oil seed rape. A local farmer who owned the land wanted the club out but lost a legal case so this seemed to have been his retaliation. The farmer claimed it was simply crop rotation but club members appeared to think otherwise. One told the Daily Mail: "It's impossible to find balls when they go in there." Can anyone shed light on whether this was resolved ...

A short film showing traffic on Blackfriars Bridge in July 1896. Pioneering filmmaker Robert W. Paul positioned his camera at the southern end of the bridge, looking north towards the City of London. Beyond lay Fleet Street and St Paul’s, while steam trains (unfortunately not seen here) crossed the neighbouring railway bridge. A wonderful glimpse of ordinary Londoners going about their lives 130 years ago. #VictorianLondon #1890s #VictorianBritain

Never underestimate the stupidity of a man who thinks he's qualified to 'rate' a woman's appearance. Joe here, the Cillian Murphy of Margate, needs to book his hard drive in to be checked.
