In 1962, Humble Oil (now ExxonMobil) boasted in Life Mag that the daily energy it supplied could melt 7 million tons of glacier ice (or 80 tons every second)
They have been trying for decades to melt Arctic to extract the oil

Berkeley Earth, September 2026 second warmest at +1.65°C

Your 'doom quote' for today:
"A key indicator is the Earth's energy imbalance, which measures how fast heat is accumulating in the climate system... it has been growing since the 1970s and is now at a record high, doubling in recent decades."

FYI: the combination of habitat & wildlife destruction and toxic, plastic, light, & noise pollution driven by the race for profit and growth will at this rate result in mass extinction in the next decades

Since 2012, climate activism has taught me one truth: This path is not easy. It will test you, break you, and rebuild you. But resilience is the price we pay for a livable planet.

Your Friday water-cooler fun fact:
The global mean surface temperature on Wednesday, October 21st was 1.89°C above pre-industrial, setting a new daily record dating back to 1940, and likely the warmest October 21st (one month past the Fall equinox) in the last 120,000 years.

I do wonder if Carl foresaw how readily this "celebration of ignorance" would be weaponized by bad actors and facilitated by an incompetent-at-best and complicit-at-worst mass media?

The gap is stark: the new UN Emissions Gap Report finds that global emissions must fall 18% by 2030 and 45% by 2035, alongside a scale-up of carbon removal, to minimise 1.5°C overshoot and return below 1.5°C by 2100. 2 chapters were led by PIK scientists. pik-potsdam.de/en/news/lates…

Exactly. Climate justice means communities must never be treated as collateral damage for corporate profits. From Uganda to the world, we demand human rights, clean energy, environmental protection, and meaningful community participation. People and nature before profit. #StopEACOP #ClimateJustice
Climate justice means protecting people, defending nature, and holding polluters accountable. Our communities need clean energy, safe environments, and a voice in decisions affecting their future. We cannot sacrifice people and ecosystems for profit. #ClimateJustice

The best way for EU countries to follow through on this resolution is to make sure their own climate roadmaps address fossil fuels, and to support the transformative leadership of Global South countries leading the push for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.

In a resolution laying out the EU's priorities for the upcoming gatherings in Antalya for COP31, the EU Parliament made a strong, science-backed call for a rapid and well-organized phase out of fossil fuels.

For years, the EU Parliament has made its stance clear: Europe must phase out fossil fuels and support a Fossil Fuel Treaty.

A major United Nations climate report says, for the first time, that the world has lost its chance to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. That was a key goal of the 2015 Paris climate accord aimed at limiting the worst effects of the climate crisis.
The annual Emissions Gap Report published Wednesday still found that steep cuts to deforestation and greenhouse gas pollution could limit the severity and duration of the expected "overshoot" of the 1.5 degree target.
The report comes ahead of global climate talks next month in Turkey, known as COP31.
