This is William F. Buckley engaged in friendly banter with Edgar Smith on his show Firing Line in 1971. Smith had been convicted of abducting and murdering a 15 year old girl in 1957 - and sentenced to death. Buckley was impressed with Smith's writing ability and became persuaded he was innocent. He supported him financially, and worked to have him freed. He succeeded in this, and then immediately had him on his television show. A few years later, Smith abducted a woman in San Diego at knife point, forced her into his car, and then stabbed her in the chest. She managed to get free from him, but Smith went back to jail, where he only died in 2017 on the taxpayer's dime. Had be been executed back in New Jersey, this woman would never have met Smith. We hear a lot from the Innocence Project about people being let out of jail on technicalities who may be innocent - and might not be. But we don't hear enough about the cases where people intervene to get guilty people released, who then go on and victimize others. A little more balance would be good.

It's a major black mark on the Catholic Church that we've allowed Fernando III of Castile and Leon (1199-1252) to be almost forgotten. He's one of the greatest men ever to pick up a sword—and a canonized saint. Fernando never lost a battle. He took back more territory from the Moors than any other Spanish king during the Reconquista: Cazorla, Úbeda, Córdoba, Niebla, Huelva, Écija, Lucena, Oriheula, Murcia, Arjona, Mula, Lorca, Cartesian, Jaén, Alicante, and then Sevilla. Along the way he reclaimed the Bells of Santiago de Compostela taken by al-Mansur a couple centuries before. In battle he always took the lead, declaring he'd never expose his vassals to more danger than he exposed himself. By the end of his campaigning only Granada remained, and they were paying tribute to Fernando. El Santo planned an expedition to North Africa to finish the job completely, but died before he could launch it. And, like I said, he is a saint, known during his lifetime, as El Santo. Fernando often worried his men with his habit of keeping all-night prayer vigils before a battle. His efforts liberated countless Christians from Moorish and rescued souls from apostasy. On top of all this, he was a great lawgiver, patriarch, and friend—really the complete man, not the kind you allow to be forgotten. Art by Antonio Palomino—

Ten years ago today, my son stricken with cancer married his sweetheart from his hospice bed. They reduced his medication so he could say his vows cleary. A brave lad who can never be forgotten. They were man and wife for 8 days until death did they part. So sad.❤️💔🥲

"Who is far from love is a bad state, and to be pitied. He passes his days in a delirious dream, far from God, deprived of light, and he lives in darkness ... Whoever does not have the love of Christ is an enemy of Christ. He walks in darkness and is easily lead into any sin." ~St. Ephrem the Syrian

In 1996, an amateur archaeologist was walking along the Tollense River in northern Germany when he spotted a human arm bone sticking out of the riverbank. Lodged in the bone was a flint arrowhead. Archaeologists eventually started digging, and they kept finding bodies. The remains of more than 140 people so far, along with horses. And they've only excavated a small part of the valley. The bones dated to around 1250 BC. Most of them were young men. Many had wounds that never healed, because they died from them. Arrowheads stuck in bone. Skulls smashed by blunt weapons. Wounds from behind, as if men were cut down while running. This was a battle. Probably the oldest large-scale battlefield ever found in Europe. Before Tollense, most historians thought Bronze Age northern Europe was a world of small villages and small fights. Raids, feuds, maybe a few dozen men at a time. Tollense blew that up. Based on how many died and how much ground the fighting covered, researchers have estimated that a few thousand men might have taken part. Some of them had old healed injuries, too. These weren't farmers grabbing whatever was nearby. Some look like men who had fought before. The weapons were a mix. Bronze swords and spearheads. Bronze and flint arrowheads. And wooden clubs, including one shaped like a baseball bat and one shaped like a croquet mallet. Then it gets stranger. Chemical tests on teeth suggest many of the dead didn't grow up anywhere near the valley. And in 2016, archaeologists found what looks like one warrior's personal kit, a bundle of bronze tools and scrap metal. The style points to someone from southern central Europe, hundreds of miles away. So who was fighting whom, and why here? Nobody knows for sure. One theory is that the battle was over a causeway crossing the river, part of a trade route. There's no written record of it. No names, no winner, no story. Just a riverbank full of young men, 3,000 years old, and a war nobody knew had happened.

You argue as though putting a dangerous man in a maximum-security or supermax prison means that society is thereafter completely protected from him. It doesn't. It simply changes who is exposed to the danger. In federal prisons alone, roughly a dozen prisoners a year were victims of homicide in the years immediately before 2020. In state prisons, 143 prisoners were homicide victims in 2019 alone. Prison staff are assaulted as well, and, although fortunately much more rarely, correctional officers have been murdered by inmates. A prison wall does not make a violent man harmless. It principally changes the population he is capable of harming from the general public to other prisoners and the men and women who required to guard him.
