I’ve seen many people on the right deliberately twisting and leaving out key parts of Shabana Mahmood’s statement about women travelling on small boats, so let’s break it down:
She wasn’t stating the men arriving in the UK are the ones raping women.
She was talking about what happens before they get on the boats, and the criminal gangs and people smugglers organising those journeys who are responsible for the abuse.
She said people in northern France are “sifted” by “criminal gangs who are also… people traffickers.” Again she did not state these people were traveling over on small boats, these are the people smugglers she's refering to who stay in France continuing to organise the crossover's.
She then said: “You can almost guarantee that every woman that’s in the north of France has probably been raped along the journey.”
And then: “Some of the men too, they’ve certainly been abused and threatened.”
They have very conveniently left this quite important piece of information out.
That distinction really isn’t complicated. She was talking about people being abused and threatened during the journey, in the context of the gangs organising and controlling it, not the ones travelling over.
She was NOT accusing the people being trafficked of carrying out those crimes, again stating that some of the men themselves have been abused and threatened.
But they will take away literally all the context and suddenly you can make it sound like she was calling all the men arriving here rapists.
If you're going to share news, at least make sure you have included some context.
The right absolutely hate context.
