….they literally had Dexter Lawrence already! And traded him for much less than the Titans traded Simmons for.
In an unusual move, Giants head coach John Harbaugh called Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk directly in an attempt to trade for All Pro DT Jeffery Simmons. Obviously, it didn’t work. My latest What I’m Hearing column at @TheAthletic nytimes.com/athletic/7740323…

I think we have reason to believe Bryce sits in that 3rd tier.
Below Bryce is a tier where the offense non-viable in anything but a very strong situation, and average in a strong situation.
What to do with Tier 3 QBs is a fascinating team building question

No QB creates elite offense all by themselves
Elite tier QBs carry good offenses even in awful situations
Tier 2 QBs = capable of elite offense in good situations, average offense in bad situations
Tier 3 QBs = good offense in good situations, bad offense in bad situations

The key question is whether teams should pay a QB in Bryce’s tier what the market demands.
I am strong believer they should not, but teams almost always do.

Conversation on Bryce after last night strikes me as mis-calibrated.
The OL is in shambles. Only an elite QB would have a real shot in that environment.
Bryce clearly isn’t one. But we knew that already.
The early excitement was about him moving from awful to average starter.
I’m more surprised to see Jonathan Cooley fired than Ejiro Evero. Cooley was tabbed as a rising star in the coaching world just this offseason in The Athletic’s ‘NFL 50 Under 40’ nytimes.com/athletic/7549868…

A few things to point out here:
- Wash oversaw the 2nd-ranked defense in the league in 2017 and was the DC for the Jags when they went to the AFC title game. He worked with both Canales and Morgan in Seattle.
- Pete Hansen was named assistant defensive coordinator in the offseason -- an unusual title by NFL standards -- and was passed over for the playcalling gig. He will likely remain in his role as mostly an ILB coach.
The #Panthers are parting ways with DC Ejiro Evero and passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley.
DL coach Todd Wash will take over as interim defensive coordinator.
I’m not sure firing Ejiro Evero now was necessarily about the Packers loss as much as timing. The Panthers had their BYE in Week 5 so this is the longest break in between games for the rest of the season. If you’re going to replace a coordinator, now is the time to do it.
The Packers OL was in similar shambles to the Panthers OL and Carolina couldn’t get a sack despite blitzing almost half the time. Brutal.
The Panthers had a 44% blitz rate and did not sack Jordan Love
That is the 4th highest blitz rate without generating a sack in a game this season, per @SumerSports
I think it’s fair to say Bryce is less than 100% with his mobility because of the knee. I also think it’s fair to say that Bryce is less able to withstand a ~10% drop in athleticism from injury than a lot of other quarterbacks because he’s more physically limited already.
Bryce Young, with a brace on his left knee (injured against Cleveland in Week 3), says “I’m fine.” And he refuses to make excuses with the injury. #Panthers

“I think there is some amount of defenses are allowed to rush and pressure the way that they want to because they are not scared of him beating them that much outside of the pocket."
Derrik and @davehelman_ break down a tough night for Bryce Young in the Carolina Panthers' Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers pressured Bryce Young on nine of his 21 dropbacks in the first half. He went 1-for-7 for 2 yards and 1 INT on those plays. (via @ESPNInsights )
Explains the lack of downfield throws. Panthers struggling to protect off the edge.
What exactly is the upside to running plays there instead of taking a knee? Backed up against your own endzone, Dave Canales is flirting with disaster

Could see Chuba Hubbard going over his receiving yardage projection tonight.
Panthers targeting RBs: 7.3 yards per target, +0.46 EPA/play
Packers defending RB targets: 6.7 yards per target allowed, +0.28 EPA/play allowed
The Packers’ inability to punch it in when they get close has plagued them this year. Green Bay is averaging a league worst 4.00 points per red zone possession. While there’s reasons for it to be bad (bad OL), you’d have to anticipate some positive regression coming on that front

TNF Preview:
Chuba Hubbard matches up well against a Green Bay defense that has struggled to defend zone runs this season
The Packers on a down-to-down basis have just not been good this year. When you look at rushing and passing success rate, their closest peer is the Dolphins.
Potential for a lot of flags tonight. The Packers are 2nd (34) and the Panthers are 3rd (33) in penalties this season.

The #panthers are expected to start a secondary of rookie CB Will Lee III and CB Marco Wilson who was signed on 10/6. At safety Nick Scott, Tre’Von Moehrig. Also rookie Zakee Wheatley will be out there, who they've been impressed with so far. Chau Smith-Wade not expected to start.
