The new K-12 federal tax credit is being strongly resisted by the AFT and NEA. What do their members think? They support it.

Karen Lewis would be rolling over in her grave. One of the things CORE promised was not have leadership make more than rank and file
$445,000 for CTU/IFT President @stacydavisgates. So much #winning for teachers. For the kids.

People in Chicago--including many school board candidates--need to understand that this is the reality. Birth rates are down. The kids are not *there* to be recaptured. Work to "bring families back" to CPS is probably changes the picture on the margin, but not by a lot.
I estimate that birth rate is by far the biggest factor in public school enrollment loss. Next up: unsubsidized sector switching, then ESA/vouchers. On the latter: AZ, FL, WV & likely TX are much more impactful on public enrollment than elsewhere, likely due to homeschool subsidy, not tuition.

Julie writes honestly about CPS as a parent, so her support in this race means a lot to me. Thank you, Julie. A board member’s job is to engage families and answer the hard questions. I’ve done that in District 6 and will keep doing it as Board President. cpfinsider.substack.com/p/it…

Listen I understand y’all want your kids to have their phones at school bc you worry about them and I don’t really feel super strongly either way about school phone bans but why do almost zero parents go as hard on the concerns about how many teachers are saying your kids literally don’t know how to read. This is the future of America and we genuinely argue more over whether or not your kid should be able to have a cell phone than how/why standardized test scores have drastically declined and kids are multiple grade levels behind on reading comprehension

Teachers and parents agree on what public schools need next. NPU survey parents. E4E polled teachers. Five priorities came out on top: 1. Every kid needs a trusted adult at school. 2. Struggling schools need support. 3. Kids need real help learning to read. 4. Funding should follow student need. 5. Kids need protection from bad tech and training in good tech. Under the READ Act, schools would have to tell parents when their child is at risk for reading difficulties or reading below grade level. Parents deserve that news early enough to act on it. The Senate has until the end of the year to pass the READ Act. Call your Senators and ask for a vote before time runs out.

At a stadium, the seats are in rows facing the field so people can pay attention to the game. At a concert, they’re in rows facing the stage so people can pay attention to the show. At a movie theater, they’re in rows facing the screen so people can pay attention to the movie. At a church, they’re in rows facing the pulpit so people can pay attention to the service. Teachers, Why are you putting kids in pods with seats that don’t face you? Don't you want them paying attention to you?

This wouldn’t be the first time they have defamed me while hiding the facts. Hilario says he takes accountability, but all he has done is point the finger at others, including me.

i just want to point out that it's sad in Chicago's progressive circles that it's more of an indictment of bad behavior if a person went through Teach for America than if they harass a teenage girl

Yesterday I was in a 4th grade classroom where the kids were struggling to learn long division. A lot the kids couldn't remember how to even start to solve the problem. I quietly asked the new-to-math teacher if she was aware of DMSB-- Dad, Mother, Sister brother. It's an easy way to remember the steps: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down. Today I got a text from her that they tried it and it really helped a lot. What a way to start my day!

I'm listening to the Sold a Story podcast season two, which is on math education in the US, and it is enough to give me an aneurysm, seriously. The season opens with a bunch of little kids' voices doing very basic algebra, and you learn later that these are poor Black four-year-olds, and all of them are getting the problems correct. Oh, and they're super engaged. Apparently, there was a group that figured out you can have kids go very fast in math if you just did direct instruction. But somehow, culturally, this was deemed "too hard" and too much of a "pressure cooker" for little kids. It's pretty funny because it's not like there was any high-stakes testing or anything. It literally was just teaching the kids instead of "letting them discover it themselves." I did a master's in education, and there was a lot of content in the program about equity, and how socioeconomic class, parental habits and attitudes, and level of education really shape a kid's academic achievement. It's just infuriating to hear that when they discovered a teaching method that works in spite of these disadvantages, it was thrown out as being, I guess, somehow not "fun" enough. It's difficult to believe that they didn't actually have ulterior motives.

Restorative practices are when we ask bullied children to be mature enough to forgive classmates who apparently aren’t mature enough to stop tormenting them.

The teacher who gives a failing grade has to explain it to the student, the parents, and the principal. The teacher who gives everyone an A has a quiet weekend. Still confused about how grade inflation has gotten so bad?
