If you are a Catholic you need to submit to Rome. It’s non-negotiable. The Pope is the Vicar of Christ, meaning he’s the representative for Christ on Earth and the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church. This doesn’t mean you need to agree with everything he says, especially when he’s speaking in a personal capacity on matters not relating to the Church, but when he’s discussing Church doctrine you should listen.
