also, the remedy to this feeling of exploitation on the part of authors is to cultivate a fandom community environment where the primary medium of engagement w/ fanworks is not ao3 comments! friends/beta readers reacting, circulating drafts or excerpts on social media, etc

ofc i understand where you and other creators are coming from, because that's the logic of social media platforms that function on an attention/influence based economy. but if ao3 is an archive, as it says it is, then you have to respect those norms.

i just notice that most times ppl have a hard time showing any sign of appreciation tbh. my case is maybe even more specific bc i write my own things but majority of my fics are requests i get from others- on tumblr or ao3. the amount of times I've been requested to write stuff and then I never got a thank you is honestly very high VS the times I actually get a "thank you"... idk how we've come to this point of not even saying thanks to people who do stuff for you lmao, and I do keep writing because I have fun and I'm happy when people express joy over what I've written for them but you can't deny that this kind of stuff is a little depressing when you think about it. I'm also not saying comment on every single fic on the internet but I'm just baffled at the amount of ppl who just never consider hearing a compliment would be nice on the other part, & come on here shitting on the community instead sometimes too.

ao3 is build so you get you credit off bat. We're not entitled to fics & you're not entitled to kudos and comments. Both are lovely to have but neither are mandatory. You speak about readers so poorly yet want those same people to read your shit.

Every week you see people arguing people don’t write as much, that they don’t see long fics anymore, that a lot of authors disappear and don’t finish WIPs. And then turn right around and argue writers don’t deserve engagement or credit for months if not years of work.

It’s barely been one day of ao3 down and some of yall are already starting ridiculous discourse. Ppl downloading + sharing fics when the site is down is such a lovely example of community and is functioning exactly as ao3 intended: preserving access to fics.

My opinion on people downloading fic is that: if they intended to give comments/kudos, they would find a way to do so before or after downloading the fic. Writers aren't missing out just bc someone downloaded it to their private archive
