also, the remedy to this feeling of exploitation on the part of authors is to cultivate a fandom community environment where the primary medium of engagement w/ fanworks is not ao3 comments! friends/beta readers reacting, circulating drafts or excerpts on social media, etc
for fandom to truly be a sustainable community there must be roles for fans of all levels, involvement, & skills! there used to be more than just "content creators" there were organizers, critics, curators, hype-ppl, etc who all produced a robust, generative culture of engagement

no hate to op but genuinely none of the people asking this question are old enough/knowledgable in fandom history enough to remember WHY fic drives exist. they’re literally created to avoid fic purges from decimating fundamental texts to the fandoms
cases like this illustrate the importance of emphasizing again and again that ao3 is not a content platform, its an archive. it exists to house fanworks w/out fear of deletion, & offers a way of navigating the archive like the dewey decimal system helps you navigate a library
ofc everyone is capable of deleting their works, but given the archival logic, to delete a fanwork is to delete something from the historical record. downloading is a type of counterbalance, and a way of maintaining an exact copy of the work as it existed a particular day.
