This week, I learned that I was uninvited to this year’s National Governors Association dinner — a decades-long annual tradition meant to bring governors from both parties together to build bonds and celebrate a shared service to our citizens with the President of the United States. My peers, both Democrats and Republicans, selected me to serve as the Vice Chair of the NGA, another reason why it’s hard not to see this decision as another example of blatant disrespect and a snub to the spirit of bipartisan federal-state partnership. As the nation’s only Black governor, I can’t ignore that being singled out for exclusion from this bipartisan tradition carries an added weight — whether that was the intent or not. What makes it especially confounding is that just weeks ago I was at the White House with a bipartisan group of governors, working with the administration on reforms to lower energy costs and strengthen grid reliability. We proved in that moment what’s possible when we stay focused on outcomes over politics. As Governor of Maryland and Vice Chair of the NGA, my approach will never change: I’m ready to work with the administration anywhere we can deliver results. Yet, I promised the people of my state I will work with anybody but will bow down to nobody. And I guess the President doesn’t like that.

One of the many reasons I am proud to be an Alpha man. Those brothers changed the world, even though their country would not acknowledge their achievements, or their human rights at that time. Still, onward and upward. 🤙🏾

“We need JUCO back in Arizona.” I agree completely. But instead of focusing on what is no longer here, why not recognize and support what is here now? Since the end of the inaugural 2025 Sonoran Sidewinders season: 10 of our players have earned college offers, all of them former Arizona high school athletes, and more offers are on the horizon. Our players are currently on college visits, and our momentum continues to build. Reporters, you covered these young men throughout their high school careers. Coaches, these are players who came from your programs. Yet rather than following their continued growth, many have overlooked the work they are doing today in the only in-state opportunity available for them to pursue college football while earning their education. Throughout this season, I saw very few of you at our games or practices. I hope that changes. What I did see were dedicated players, coaches, and staff committed to daily improvement, along with supportive families and fans who consistently showed pride in these young men and belief in what we are building. My coaching staff and I remain fully committed to establishing a sustainable home for JUCO football in Arizona and ensuring our players have meaningful options for the next stage of their academic and athletic careers. To the critics, continue speaking if you choose, and we will continue placing our players at the next level. To prospective recruits, if you are seeking development, opportunity, and genuine support, this is an environment designed for your success.
