MP @JamesAsser says it's "absolutely infuriating" that 200+ of his constituents have been forced out of three Canning Town towers overnight. He should be. But his party has known about this crisis for years. Royal Gateway is about 10 years old and already run by residents under Right to Manage. Leasehold tenure reform wouldn't have saved anyone. This is England's unspoken housing crisis: too much new-build stock isn't built to the standard it was sold and mortgaged on. When it fails, the bill lands on buyers who've put everything into a deposit and can't fund repairs or years of litigation. So most absorb it, and stay quiet. In 2023, @Keir_Starmer pressed Michael Gove over @dannybster's new-build in his own Camden constituency, a block its own developer's survey said might need demolishing. His constituents, he said, "cannot be left paying the cost of a broken system." He never came to see it. Then Labour took power, and his office offered Dan help only within existing law. Dan's new Labour MP, @Sagal_AW, hasn't visited yet either. Green leader @ZackPolanski has. Seven years and more than £500,000 in legal costs later, Dan's flat is uninsurable and unmortgageable, with still no viable plan to fix it. Meanwhile the government's Your First Home scheme is nudging more buyers into new builds. So, @JamesAsser: you asked who's at fault. Part of the answer is your own government. Labour has had more than two years to give new-build buyers real protection and still hasn't. Will you push it to make developers, contractors, inspectors and warranty providers pay, or just stay infuriated? Infuriating isn't a policy.

In public policy, when something is obviously wrong & not getting fixed, there can only be 2 possible reasons 1. Government & regulatory agencies, media etc are incompetent &/or 2. the situation is deliberate &/or designed &/or captured to serve the interests of those with power.

How are basic adult necessities turning into luxury items? Why is car insurance £1,200 a year for an old hatchback? Why is a standard weekly food shop hitting £80 for one person? Why is gas and electric sitting at £150 a month in a small flat? Why does an off peak train ticket cost more than a short haul flight? We’re not even spending money on fun anymore. We're just paying endless subscription fees to exist in the UK.

Matthew Pennycook is a widely respected minister. To insinuate that the government "knowingly left" specific flaws in this legislation is totally disingenuous and entirely wrong. I was the minister responsible and I worked closely with officials, after I left government I sat on the bill committee that scrutinised this. I do not recall Pennycook ever mentioning these flaws while he was shadowing me or my successor. He is talking about technical legislation drafted by government lawyers. The same ones that advised us, and are now advising him. Drafting errors occur every single day in government business, that's why governments put down amendments to their own legislation every day in both houses. Pennycook knows this full well. I've been the first one to say we made mistakes in government and we got things wrong. But for Pennycook to make this allegation quite shameful and I hope he takes it down and apologises. I've put down PQs on these so-called "flaws" and I've attached answers from the government to this post. Judge for yourself. We were making the running on this, after years of inaction by successive governments And had he and his Housing Secretaries had the best interests of leaseholders at heart, as soon as he had got his feet under the desk and discovered these drafting errors, they could have taken action. It's now more than two years since they won a landslide and they've not tackled it. So spare me this type of misinformation and criticism! questions-statements.parliam…
Ignore the misinformation. We need to fix a small number of specific flaws that the previous government knowingly left in its Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 to ensure that the enfranchisement measures in that piece of legislation can operate as intended. We have made clear we intend to make those fixes through our forthcoming Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill. Once we have done so and can implement the new valuation process, it will be cheaper and easier for leaseholders to extend their lease or buy their freehold.

I work with so many 24-35 year olds in a position to buy in London, all of them say the same thing, I’ve seen what leasehold does to people, I’d rather rent a flat share. Developers won’t listen tho.

How good is Season Four of The Diplomat! On Netflix - Rory Kinnear’s Prime Minister is the business. So well written and the camera work at the start of Episode 2 deserves an award.

I think this post missed a crucial and most important economic point: people do not want to invest hundreds of thousands of pounds in new builds at a high risk of defects. The producer (developer) needs to realise market consumers (buyers) do not want substandard products (defect-ridden flats).

You WILL eat less meat…..
🚨 Britain has lost more than 90% of its abattoirs since the 1970s, leaving many livestock farmers struggling to access local slaughter facilities. With concerns growing over the future of British meat production, a coalition of more than 150 organisations, businesses and individuals is calling for urgent Government action. Lose the local abattoir and the small producer loses the route to market. Long journeys are bad for welfare, bad for the meat and bad for the farm. This is not glamorous, but it matters.

This has been enabled by a political system that does not understand the issues and won’t tackle them. The fundamental problem is the terrible standard of construction in residential new builds. A great planning permission on paper is often a defective nightmare in reality!
