I reviewed NY's data-center "moratorium" so you don't have to. The bottom line: it's not just a one-year delay for the biggest facilities. It's an open-ended mess that would create permanent obstacles for building even relatively small data processors. city-journal.org/article/new…

Troy is the only city in NY split across two school districts (Troy and Lansingburgh). One of the obstacles of merging them has been the purported need to keep two varsity football programs. If Yonkers, with >2x the population, can get by with one, so can Troy.

Lansingburgh and Troy combined would still cover less area than the Brunswick or Hoosic Valley districts and would have fewer students than Albany.

TWU is big mad because Hochul vetoed a bill that would have required two dues-paying TWU workers on every subway train (many major cities have just one, and some have zero). Hochul stood up for riders and taxpayers. It should be "toxic" to support TWU rentseeking.
Major transit union launches ad blitz ripping Hochul as so 'toxic' that Dem pols are running from her trib.al/IcmHgoL

Talking about the crisis of the West without mentioning pensions and senior healthcare is like talking about a plane crash without mentioning gravity.
David Friedberg: France’s Crisis Is a Warning for America “France is a bellwether for the West. So take a look at this chart. This chart is a measure of public spending as a percent of GDP. And you can see the comparison of France's public spending as a % of GDP to the peak public spending as a % of GDP of major communist nations.” @Chamath: “So do you think France is a communist state? They spend like it.” @Jason: “Well, it's certainly been a socialist state, right?” Chamath: “Is it working?” @Friedberg: “That's my point. And I think this is such a prescient lesson for the West to look at. We all think that there's some political problem with Macron or whoever it was. The more the government spends, the worse the conditions get for its people, not the opposite, and then the people riot and revolt. Take a guess where the US is today. US public spending is roughly 36% of GDP. France today is operating its national government spending deficit is 5.4% of GDP. The US is actually 6.2% of GDP. France is, I think, probably the first to go because they're only growing their economy at half a percent while the US is growing at 2.3%. So we're still kind of hanging on because we have some degree of economic growth that's allowing us to kind of hold things together. But I would argue that we are facing the same sort of fiscal cliff which leads to this extraordinary social unrest as France. All the economic measures are aligned, we're at the same rate, we're at the same set of problems, and we're starting to see the cracks in the system. There's probably a multi-year solution.”

"Vague/useless" is fairly on-brand for the (39-member!) Albany County Legislature.
Not sure I’ve ever seen a more vague/useless description for a ballot measure.

Look at this silliness. The Albany County Legislature is mainly this big because it's a way for more pols to get county healthcare and state pension benefits.

Put another way, Albany could have nine fewer county legislature seats and it would still be the state's biggest.

Electric bills are up about 50 percent in NYC since 2019, but they've more than doubled in parts of upstate.

🚨🔌 New electricity bill data from the feds: New York residential rates jumped 8.0% last year, almost twice as quickly as the national average (+4.5%). Total increase since 2019 is 47%, compared to 32% nationally.

Important caveat: statewide data give a good picture of the overall trend, but NY is a big and diverse state. Rates in NYC and on Long Island are much higher than upstate. So statewide average is 53% greater than national, but NYC rates for instance are closer to double the US.

Tbf, paying a boatload for projects truly is part of the “historic character of the building”
I reached out to the NYS Office of General Services about the railings. They’re going up on the Senate and Assembly staircases, but NOT the Million Dollar Staircase. OGS cites safety reasons for installing them. Total cost: $700,000

It "sounds familiar" because it's a doctrine NYS pioneered under Gov. David Paterson in 2010.
Hmmm this sounds familiar 🤔

What happened to NY electricity prices after 2019?
Small businesses across New York City had to turn off their AC in 90-degree heat just to afford skyrocketing energy bills. New Yorkers are struggling because of Trump’s reckless war and costly tariffs.

I see a lot of people describing Social Security benefit cuts as "changing the bargain," but this is wrong. The rules that have been in place for decades explicitly require that benefits be cut to a level that can be paid with SS tax revenues once the trust fund runs out. The retirees calling for taxes to be raised above the tax rate that they paid on their own wages in order to avoid the legally mandated cuts are the ones trying to change the bargain for their own benefit.
Well, if you wanna change the bargain because it’s to your benefit, then I don’t think I’m going to feel very guilty about using my power to not let you do that. I don’t see you or your generation not wanting what security Social Security provides. When I see them is not wanting to pay their share of it, which means paying the previous generation. That doesn’t sound like a very good deal to me so we’re not going to do that. I am willing to listen to ideas that don’t involve me getting screwed and no one else.

Neat!
What happens when a blackout hits the Florida Keys? They have to do what grid operators call a black start. I recently visited the Keys Energy Generating Facility on Stock Island to see how they do it. As you’ll see in this five-minute mini-documentary, they start with a 2-megawatt diesel-fired engine and gradually add more capacity until they can fire up their large gas turbines. In all, the facility has 105 MW of capacity, all of which runs on diesel fuel. The power plant is owned by the Florida Municipal Power Agency and is operated by Keys Energy Services, a municipal utility which provides electricity to Key West and the lower Florida Keys. I love seeing big iron. I particularly like visiting power plants and seeing how they work. Many thanks to my good friend at FMPA, Jacob Williams, and to Lynne Tejada and Robbie Berger at Keys Energy for coordinating my visit.
