Talking about the crisis of the West without mentioning pensions and senior healthcare is like talking about a plane crash without mentioning gravity.
David Friedberg: France’s Crisis Is a Warning for America
“France is a bellwether for the West.
So take a look at this chart. This chart is a measure of public spending as a percent of GDP.
And you can see the comparison of France's public spending as a % of GDP to the peak public spending as a % of GDP of major communist nations.”
@Chamath:
“So do you think France is a communist state? They spend like it.”
@Jason:
“Well, it's certainly been a socialist state, right?”
Chamath:
“Is it working?”
@Friedberg:
“That's my point. And I think this is such a prescient lesson for the West to look at.
We all think that there's some political problem with Macron or whoever it was.
The more the government spends, the worse the conditions get for its people, not the opposite, and then the people riot and revolt.
Take a guess where the US is today. US public spending is roughly 36% of GDP. France today is operating its national government spending deficit is 5.4% of GDP. The US is actually 6.2% of GDP.
France is, I think, probably the first to go because they're only growing their economy at half a percent while the US is growing at 2.3%.
So we're still kind of hanging on because we have some degree of economic growth that's allowing us to kind of hold things together.
But I would argue that we are facing the same sort of fiscal cliff which leads to this extraordinary social unrest as France.
All the economic measures are aligned, we're at the same rate, we're at the same set of problems, and we're starting to see the cracks in the system.
There's probably a multi-year solution.”

I see a lot of people describing Social Security benefit cuts as "changing the bargain," but this is wrong. The rules that have been in place for decades explicitly require that benefits be cut to a level that can be paid with SS tax revenues once the trust fund runs out.
The retirees calling for taxes to be raised above the tax rate that they paid on their own wages in order to avoid the legally mandated cuts are the ones trying to change the bargain for their own benefit.
Well, if you wanna change the bargain because it’s to your benefit, then I don’t think I’m going to feel very guilty about using my power to not let you do that.
I don’t see you or your generation not wanting what security Social Security provides. When I see them is not wanting to pay their share of it, which means paying the previous generation. That doesn’t sound like a very good deal to me so we’re not going to do that. I am willing to listen to ideas that don’t involve me getting screwed and no one else.

“If Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, and New Jersey don’t opt in to the program, New York will gladly take their donations and spend them on our neediest students.”
My latest for @CityJournal on NY decision to opt in to the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program.
NEW: Kathy Hochul just chose kids over the teachers' unions.
Teachers' unions waged a fierce campaign to keep New York out of the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program, which allows people to make tax-deductible contributions that will go to scholarships for New York students.
Hochul’s announcement makes New York the 31st state to opt in. She is the second Democratic governor to do so.
Hochul deserves credit for holding firm against teachers' unions and their allies. We should hope other blue-state governors will demonstrate the same courage.
