For ages 6-12, that raises the question of when year-round play and the potential future travel commitment becomes a factor for both parents and kids.

No doubt the NCAA has been trying to maintain the status quo in the face of a changing world.

Which might happen anyway to help deal with the budget crunch from required conference travel and the reduced football/basketball subsidy.

Soccer is one of the only team sports where participation has increased over its pre-pandemic numbers (and flag football is really a one-off because it has only recently developed as an approved girls' sport at the high school and college levels).
New youth sports data is out from @AspenInstSports via @TheSFIA. Findings from 2025 include: Tennis & golf participation surges Flag football keeps growing Low-income kids are being left behind Fewer adults are coaching My analysis: projectplay.org/news/youth-s…

A reminder that the Fall-Spring D1 men’s soccer plan is not quite a done deal. If the NCAA allowed it, the compromise solution would be for some of these programs/conferences to drop a division, while remaining D1 in other sports
Men's college soccer celebrated its move to a fall-spring season. But behind the scenes, there's a strong push to block it. ~150 schools have submitted rescission votes. The NCAA D-1 board will discuss today. News + explainer, free to read @TheAthletic: nytimes.com/athletic/7726710…

The World Series matchup might not help the owners' case for a salary cap, but it might help the players' case for a higher salary floor as the Guardians total payroll was more than $20M less than the Rays.
The best teams in the AL and NL, with the 27th and 19th highest payrolls, will play to determine a first-time World Series winner.

To clarify, the Eurocentric view is that because Europe has the best leagues, players, and biggest TV contracts, if UEFA is united against Infantino, he's out even though UEFA voters have no more power (and fewer total voters) than voters in other regions

A more and more common statement: “Eurocentric understanding of the governance/power structure”. Not sure what that means exactly. Besides that: good governance is good governance. If that is Eurocentric, I’m fine with that.

Moreover, the Man City scandal (which is likely unique only in scale, not type, in Europe) suggests both that European football is hardly morally pure in separating money and football and may not be independent enough from other regions to spin-off from FIFA 4/4

Europe has levers it could use to push against Infantino, but it has to be careful about damaging the golden goose. Football officials and politicians may talk about boycotting the World Cup etc., but fans/players may not allow them to follow through with such threats 3/

That's not to say the rest of the world is not critical of Infantino and his various plans, but their criticism tends to be part of a negotiation rather than planks in a campaign platform against him. 2/

As I have been saying for awhile, it's hard to confidently count out Infantino. Most predictions of his demise come from a Eurocentric understanding of the governance/power structure that's not reflective of the way the system works on paper and in reality. 1/
Most football fans detest Gianni Infantino. But the Swiss son of poor Italian immigrants may be exactly the FIFA president that most national football federations want. Me @FT on how power in the global game works, and why he's likely to survive. Free link as.ft.com/r/ccedc296-d545-4f…

I’m sure this is at the top of Infantino’s agenda for the “independent” FIFA reform process he has indicated willingness to consider
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been accused of “woefully inadequate” levels of co-operation after failing to satisfactorily respond to an attempt by Democratic members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee to scrutinise FIFA’s relationship with the Trump administration. This is like when the club director informs the parents that they are not allowed to ask their coach about substitutions and playing time and the coach, hearing no complaints from the parents, assumes everyone is happy
Tuchel has said that 99.9 per cent England fans don't speak to him about the last 30 mins against Argentina or his substitutions. He says they speak to him about Mexico and the second half against Croatia. In that case, I must speak to 0.01 per cent of England fans.

Corner Kicks as a tie breaker at the end of overtime? I did not know the NCAA used that instead of a PK shootout!
The Stanford Herald - December 3, 1966. @DrJoeMachnik do you remember this well?

Full circle 🫶 Xabi Alonso and Mikel Arteta grew up playing together for Antiguoko Kirol Elkartea in San Sebastian and today managed against each other in the Premier League for the first time.

My guess is the reason Leonard got off easy is that the NBA crafted the punishment to make sure the Players Ass'n would not challenge it under the CBA, which would be the best legal recourse to overturn it. It's deliberately easy on the player, but hard on the owner and the team.
Did Kawhi get off easy with a $700K fine from the NBA in the Clippers' salary cap circumvention case? 🤔 @KellyIko has more: yhoo.it/4iKsooI

Infantino's violations of FIFA regulations and questionable ethics positions were reported back in 2016, as well as his undermining of the FIFA reforms by threatening removal of the independent committee chairs/members, leading many to resign. No one should be surprised by this.

It's almost like owners saw the proposal from last summer to limit the amortization of intangibles in the sales of pro teams from 100% to 50% and figure it's better to get sales done before that change comes back.
Stan Kroenke’s reach in Southern California is getting bigger. The Rams owner has agreed to buy the Angels, extending KSE’s footprint from SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park into Orange County’s 3M+ person market. ow.ly/H1J950ZHWQX
