PublicHealthMessage#8: Conflict Exacerbates Women’s Morbidity and Mortality According to a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report and other related studies, the 2020-22 Tigray war and crisis has devastated women’s health and dignity, with over 80% of health facilities destroyed, rising maternal morbidity, deaths, and increased obstetric fistula cases due to lack of care and services. Women endure trauma, displacement, and limited access to lifesaving services, yet limited collaborative initiatives like fistula repair, maternal waiting homes, and psychosocial support offer hope and recovery. Call to action: Professionals and policymakers must urgently rebuild health systems, expand skilled maternal care, invest in mental health and economic recovery, and prioritize women’s health and rights. Sustained funding, accountability, and global solidarity are essential to restore dignity, save lives, and ensure that Tigrayan women receive the justice and healthcare they deserve. @Tigrai_TV @tigraionline @TigraiTsier @UNFPA @UNFPAEthiopia @UN @WHO @WHOEthiopia @OmnaTigray @TigrayC60610 @ayder_hospital @AksumHospi4940 #EndFistula #IncreaseObstetricsCare #WomensRights #WomanChildHealth unfpa.org/stories/healing-an…

🚨Breaking News- related to a legal case of an alleged victimization of rape and genocide survivors of Tigray women by Hiwyet organization and its CEO that was reported months ago. Someone tipped me this “Notice from the Ethiopian Federal High Court” that’s published in the @EthiopiaHerald Plaintiff: Tigray Region Justice Bureau Defendants: Hiwyet Charity Organization and Mrs Meseret Hadush W/Mariam Re: criminal litigation of aggravated breach of trust (serious breach of trust). Because you can not be found in your address to be served, you are hereby ordered to appear at the Tigray Region Supreme Court, Criminal bench Mekelle City Circuit Court on May 12, at 2:30 local time to defend to the charges filled against you. The court has ordered that if you fail to appear on the specified date and time, the case will be heard in absentia. Source: The Ethiopian Herald, April 28, 2026 Note: I firmly believe that anyone is innocent until proven guilty in the court of law but in the court of morality the bar and scrutiny must be much higher and hence the principle of presumption of credibility should apply. The Istanbul Convention and UN Women guidelines emphasize that the absence of a legal conviction does not invalidate the experiences of survivors, nor should it be used to dismiss or diminish their voices. The legal system is one avenue for justice, but it is not the only measure of truth or accountability, especially in cases where systemic barriers often prevent survivors from coming forward or achieving legal redress. FYI- @AsiaAbdulkadir @medicamondiale @monikahauser1 @MonikaHoegen @PPinzler @MichaelWindfuhr  Thank you for your attention to this matter.  Disclaimer: I have nothing personal about the accused persons or organization but given that there seems to be double victimization of the survivor of rape and SGBV, there needs to be an independent investigation. Rejoinder to “Renewed Tigray tensions raise fears of Ethiopia-Eritrea war”.  1/2 The DW Africa article “Renewed Tigray tensions raise fears of Ethiopia-Eritrea war” by Nicolas Fischer presents a familiar narrative that leans heavily on selective sourcing, questionable “expert” voices, and a tendency to frame complex political dynamics in Ethiopia through a narrow, alarmist lens. While the Horn of Africa unquestionably remains fragile, the piece risks misinforming readers by overstating the causes of the immediacy of war against Tigray/Eritrea and under-examining the regional and internal dynamics shaping the actions of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. First, the credibility and balance of sources are troubling. The article relies in part on commentary from a “former VOA journalist” who has been widely criticized for partisan positioning and whose YouTube media platform has faced allegations of financial ties to political actors affiliated with the ousted Tigray Interim Regional Administration led by Tadesse Worede (TIRA#2). I believe that responsible journalism demands transparency and balance when presenting politically entangled voices as neutral analysts. Instead, DW amplifies these perspectives without sufficient scrutiny, allowing speculative claims, particularly regarding imminent escalation to war caused by the reinstatement of the Tigray government, to pass as informed assessment. This risks turning analysis into advocacy. Second, the article exaggerates the likelihood of near-term war between Ethiopia and Eritrea by overlooking the significant domestic, regional and international constraints facing Addis Ababa. Abiy Ahmed’s government has indeed used nationalist rhetoric and, moved his troops to the boarders of Tigray, signaling militaristic postures several months ago. However, rhetoric must be distinguished from capacity and intent. Ethiopia today is deeply constrained. The federal government is grappling with persistent armed conflict in the Amhara region, where Fano militias continue to challenge federal authority. Opening a new front against Eritrea or Tigray would stretch security forces far beyond sustainable limits. Moreover, the looming June elections, widely criticized as lacking inclusivity and seen as sham to get legitimacy, further complicate any appetite for more conflict. Even if these elections are characterized as “sham” by critics, they require a minimum level of domestic stability and administrative focus. War with Eritrea or Tigray would undermine both. Regional pressures also act as a deterrent. Ethiopia’s relations with Sudan remain tense amid border disputes, and while conflict has not escalated into full-scale war, the situation remains volatile. Simultaneously, the broader geopolitical environment, particularly the economic fallout from the Middle East crisis, has worsened Ethiopia’s already fragile fiscal position. Inflation, debt distress, and foreign currency shortages make large-scale military engagement economically untenable. Third, the U.S.–Ethiopia relationship is currently marked by significant tension, with Washington prioritizing the prevention of any new conflict that could further inflame an already unstable region. Any escalation that might draw in Egypt or Middle Eastern actors would run counter to core U.S. strategic interests, which are focused on de‑escalation and regional stability. Recent signs of U.S. rapprochement with Eritrea, alongside the summoning of Ethiopia’s foreign minister to Washington to underscore concerns over potential conflict, reflect a clear policy stance: further militarization is unacceptable. Taken together, these developments suggest that Ethiopia is in no realistic position to initiate another war, unless, of course, its leadership were willing to engage in profoundly self-destructive decision-making. regime! @dwnews @dw_amharic @Yonigussie @addisstandardam @addisstandard @DawitSeyoum14 @TiborPNagyJr Source: amp.dw.com/en/renewed-tigray…

2/2 Rejoinder continues… Fourth, the article mischaracterizes political developments within Tigray. The restoration of the TPLF leadership under Debretsion Gebremichael did not provoke a dramatic response from the federal government. Contrary to the narrative of escalating confrontation, Addis Ababa’s reaction has been relatively muted. The strongest reactions have come not from Abiy’s administration but from factions associated with the former Tigray interim authorities (TIRA #1), including figures such as Getachew Reda and Tsadkan Gebretensae, whose diminishing political influence is a key, but underreported, factor in current tensions. By failing to distinguish between intra-Tigrayan political rivalries and federal-regional dynamics, DW collapses multiple layers of conflict into a single, simplified storyline of impending war. This conflation obscures more than it reveals. In conclusion, while vigilance regarding instability in the Horn of Africa is warranted, alarmist reporting grounded in selective sourcing does a disservice to readers. A more nuanced analysis would recognize that despite inflammatory rhetoric, Ethiopia’s internal fractures, economic hardships, regional entanglements and diplomatic pressures significantly limit the plausibility of imminent war with Eritrea or Tigray. If it does, I believe it would be the end of the Abiy regime! @dwnews @dw_amharic @Yonigussie @addisstandardam @addisstandard @Ethioforumm @reyotmedia @DawitSeyoum14 @TiborPNagyJr @Tigrai_TV @tigraionline Source: amp.dw.com/en/renewed-tigray…

Mr. Ambassador @TiborPNagyJr, you noted that Getachew “makes two indisputable points: the recent war devastated Tigray, and renewed conflict would do so again.” But why present this as a novel insight? Tigrayan politicians and scholars have emphasized these points for years. The key difference is credibility, Getachew’s shifting positions make his statements difficult to take seriously, as they often appear aimed at appeasing whichever audience holds influence at the moment. It is also hard to believe you overlooked the repeated appeals from Tigray to the Prosperity Party, the African Union, and the broader international community to uphold and fully implement the #COHA. You are aware that Prime Minister Abiy effectively undermined the agreement by revoking the TPLF’s legal party status, despite it being a signatory, and by failing to ensure the withdrawal of external forces from Tigray. I hope @TheAfricaReport will also publish the TPLF’s rejoinder to provide a more balanced perspective. @addisstandardam @tigraionline @DawitSeyoum14 @TghatMedia @addisstandard
Getachaw Reda's @TheAfricaReport op-ed will be either hated or loved - but he makes 2 indisputable points. The recent war devastated Tigray, and renewed conflict would do it again. Leaders decide but people suffer. No excuse to do this again. God forbid! theafricareport.com/417910/e…

The other opinions aside, the two most important messages I would take from this post are: CALM tension and talk to further PEACE. Nobody benefits from another round of war- no people, no government, no region or no western country except those selling war arsenals. It’s Day of Defiance Against War!! Did you really say “abrogated the interim governance structure established by the COHA”? When are you going to be a fair arbiter of facts? #COHA was abolished by Abiy Ahmed long ago despite Tigray asking otherwise (several statements were issued by the TPLF, TDF and even the defunct TIRA#2) to rescue it. You know very well that Abiy outlawed the signatory to the COHA long ago which literally abrogated the agreement and yet you have the audacity to point fingers at the TPLF today and accuse it for ‘abrogating’ COHA? It is disgraceful. Where did you throw your ‘academic’ hat? It looks like your statement is in coordination with Getachew Reda and Ghedion, who are bent to destroy what’s left of Tigray for sake of Abiy’s power. Disturbing!! Tigray has been in a much worse “precarious” situation and to many today is a day of defiance against living in a stats-quo of second citizenry unlike your insinuation! #StopGaslighting #StopDoubleStandards #TigrayDeservesGovernment

What’s wrong? As resident of Mekelle and a member of Tigrayan society, it is deeply concerning that you lack the courage or conviction to condemn such an act of terror, via Russian made fighter jets, on a day when people from across #Tigray have gathered to peacefully exercise their constitutional rights. I call upon the international community to urgently act and put an end to the reckless actions of Abiy Ahmed Ali and his forces before they plunge the region into yet another devastating and bloody conflict and humanitarian crisis. Despite repeated calls for peace and the full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement, Abiy has unilaterally undermined and effectively abandoned the agreement, leaving the other party to the agreement with no alternative but to call for the reinstatement of the previously elected government of Tigray, one that was unjustly outlawed. It must be emphasized that Tigray’s actions represent a peaceful effort to restore the dignity, sovereignty, and self-administration of its people, rights that are fully guaranteed under the constitution. There is nothing violent about this pursuit that requires military confrontation from Addis Ababa. Rather the imposed siege and blockade need to be lifted to save the people of Tigray from another crisis. The IDP need to return home before another rainy season- now!! @ChrisLandauUSA @EUCouncil @EUCouncilPress @Europarl_EN @EU_Commission @AsstSecStateAF @_AfricanUnion @Tigrai_TV @tigraionline @addisstandard @addisstandardam @martinplaut @DrChTouati @umasalam @Ethioforumm @reyotmedia @UMDMedia_ @BBCNewshour @BBCWorld @DawitSeyoum14 @getish_desta @AmlakRedeat @TiborPNagyJr
