A few years ago, Ashu had a high-paying corporate job in London, earning millions. Saurav was writing about the country’s legal system and living a great life. Both had successful careers, financial security and every reason to continue living the lives they had built for themselves.
But they chose to give it all up in the hope of making this country a better place. They had absolutely no reason to leave behind their comfortable lives, take to the streets, face uncertainty and eventually end up in jail. Yet they did.
What I admire most about these two is that despite coming from privileged backgrounds, they chose to fight for those who aren’t as fortunate. They could have easily looked the other way, enjoyed their lives and never bothered about the struggles of people they had never even met. Nobody asked them to make these sacrifices. Nobody expected them to. But they did, because they genuinely care about people beyond themselves.
And to me, that is the greatest quality a human being can have. To stand up for people you don’t know, to fight battles that aren’t your own, and to risk everything you have so that someone else might have a better life.
That’s the kind of people Ashu and Saurav are.

More judges need to speak up!
Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan today said that the right of an Indian citizen to vote is an integral part of the basic structure of the Constitution, and any process resulting in the mass disenfranchisement of citizens would be intrinsically arbitrary and violative of Articles 14 and 326 of the Constitution.

Chief Minister Vijay and Khadi
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has asked people to patronise khadi products. But who is likely to follow the advice? It costs a lot to keep even Gandhi in poverty. Khadi products are relatively expensive, and the choice of ready-made khadi garments is limited. More importantly, is Mr. Vijay himself ready to follow his own advice? I doubt it.
Politicians routinely pontificate on the virtues of government schools and hospitals. Yet many send their children to CBSE or ICSE schools, or institutions that follow international curricula, and rush to the best private hospitals when they fall ill. Some even run or manage private hospitals and schools catering to those who can afford them.
We live in a society where politicians extol virtues they are not always willing to practise themselves. Perhaps the best course is to remain silent and live in peace.
Should the right of an Indian citizen to vote be elevated to the status of a fundamental right? Yes, contends lawyer Kartikey Singh in this incisive, well-substantiated article published in The Hindu (September 28, 2026):
“Elevating the 'right to vote' to
fundamental status would not diminish the EC's authority to purify rolls; it would instead subject that authority to the heightened standard of judicial review reserved for fundamental rights, ensuring that the drive to centralise electoral administration is always weighed against, rather than allowed to override, the citizen's claim to be counted. In a democracy where software now mediates the relationship between the voter and the ballot, the constitutional status of the
'right to vote' can no longer remain a matter of legislative grace.”

Every choice made by women in public life shouldn't be met with constant scrutiny and mockery. Breaking into politics in a patriarchal society is tough enough; doing so from an oppressed community is even harder. Targeting women who push through these barriers is completely unacceptable. I strongly condemn these relentless, orchestrated controversies against Mayor Ms. Priya Rajan.
CM Vijay says he “won’t let anyone speak wrongly about any woman.” But why, then, has he allowed these attacks on Mayor Priya by his fans and cadres?
Why is it always me?
Whatever I do seems to become a controversy. From day one until today, even the simplest things become an issue. If I eat a burger, it’s an issue. If I cut my hair, it’s an issue. Every personal choice I make seems to be questioned and judged.
Sometimes I wonder is it because I am a woman, or because I belong to a particular community?
When it comes to me, I have no idea where the feminists and those who claim to stand up for women disappear.
Women in politics are not characterless or any less deserving of respect. Being a woman in public life does not give anyone the right to judge her based on her appearance, lifestyle, or personal choices.
Every woman has her own dignity, self-respect, and right to live her life on her own terms.
Beyond the position of Mayor, please remember to respect the woman.

CM Vijay @CMOTamilnadu , in his election speech today, claims that the sexual abuse and atrocities of GEM Granite Veeramani were closed during the DMK period. Any offenders should be punished, and there should be no second opinion. Any Police officer who didn't discharge their duties must also be dealt with sternly. The controversial police report appears to have been presented before the magistrate on 20.2.2026, but with liberty to approach the magistrate upon receipt of further materials. However, @CMOTamilnadu Vijay did not take back the controversial Police report or file a petition for further investigation when he assumed office in May 2026 as the head of the home portfolio, until 18th August 2026! Why ?….
CM Vijay Sir….. you (your prosecutor) were the only ones arguing to close the case when it was brought up for hearing on 19.08.2026, and the POCSO judge did not accept your (government's) arguments! Only the POCSO judge ordered further investigation within 4 weeks. Don’t claim credit or politicise it, as you haven’t done anything significant!
The victims' identities should be safeguarded, and justice should be done for them. No need வீர வசனம் !
Read “Deep rot,” today’s lead editorial in The Hindu: thehindu.com/opinion/editori…
Electoral fraud is not uncommon in electoral democracies. But the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) conducted by the Election Commission of India under the authoritarian and arrogant reign of Gyanesh Kumar belongs to a special species. It is now beyond dispute that the SIR done in several States, and worst of all in West Bengal, has inflicted a grievous and seemingly irreparable wound on India’s electoral democracy. The revelation that Chief Election Commissioner Kumar pushed through decisions related to the SIR without the knowledge, let alone consent, of the two other Election Commissioners shows arbitrariness and lawlessness of the worst kind. The Indian Express must be commended for its investigation, which has exposed how deep and how high the rot has gone into the electoral system. Unfortunately, when the scandal of the ongoing SIR was taken to the Supreme Court of India in the expectation that it would act to uphold the constitutional guarantee of universal adult franchise, the highest court in the land failed the big test. Gyanesh Kumar must resign. An impeachment motion to remove the CEC is unlikely to make headway, given the numbers in the Lok Sabha. If Gyanesh Kumar, with the backing of the Union government, decides to brazen it out, mass democratic protest will be the only way to force him out.

This is "Contempt of Court" in effect. If the Supreme Court does not step in to rectify this gross violation of due process and Citizens' Rights, it is not a functional institution in any sense of the term. And if so, one pillar of our Constitutional structure is now defunct.
Yesterday, @IndianExpress reported an unprecedented rupture inside the Election Commission: TWO of its three members objecting on record, 14 times in 10 months, to decisions taken without their knowledge.
Today, the second part of our investigation looks at the concern Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi flagged most often: Who really controls our electoral rolls?
We followed that question to Goa, where we found something deeply concerning.
Stay with me....
