Do not go gentle into that miserable midwestern winter; Wear a cream-coloured cable-knit vest even after Labor Day. Rage, rage against the dying of the summer.

Even as over 1,200 Calif. professors plead for the return of the SAT, saying students can barely handle middle school math or finish a book, the University of Wisconsin system is moving in the opposite direction, weighing a permanent end to standardized test requirements for admissions. thecollegefix.com/u-wisconsi…

On today's Feast of Christ the King, celebrated in the traditional Roman calendar, Arouca Press is pleased to announce the publication of 𝐴𝑙𝑙 𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡: 𝐸𝑛𝑐𝑦𝑐𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑆𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝐷𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑃𝑖𝑢𝑠 𝑋, edited by Vincent A. Yzermans. Saint Pius X made 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑚𝑛𝑖𝑎 𝑖𝑛 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑜—to restore all things in Christ—the guiding principle of his pontificate. His words remain particularly fitting on this feast, which reminds us of the kingship of Our Lord over individuals, families, and society. This newly published edition brings together 13 encyclicals and 10 selected documents of the saintly Pontiff, including his important teachings on Christian doctrine, the Church, the priesthood, and the restoration of Christian society. 402 pages | Paperback: $24.95 | Hardcover: $34.95 Order directly from Arouca Press: aroucapress.com/all-things-i… Also available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other online retailers.

„Ich will Ihnen sehr herzlich danken. @LEStiftung

This is real and it could happen to you. Read real books printed on paper. You might not see a difference, but your brain does.
i am blaming the fact that i have extensive notes for several thousand page long books but zero recollection of actually reading them on the fact that i read them as pdfs on my laptop

The comedy-drama film Limelight opened on this day, October 23, 1952 at the Astor Theatre and at the Trans-Lux 60th Street Theatre in New York City. Video | The two silent-era legends Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton perform a chaotic musical act filled with physical comedy, sheet-music struggles, wardrobe malfunctions, and Chaplin tumbling off the stage into a large bass drum.

Nova…not a great update. Her body is rejecting picc lines. So they’re keeping an iv in her scalp and hoping that’ll work. Also, infections & fever seem to be worsening but her surgeon wants to still have this surgery on the 28th instead of waiting for the surgical site to clear up as they need that incision for the removal of her jaw hardware. He wants to save her from “unnecessary radiation” of a ct scan to see if the infection is in her bone, and just do the surgery regardless. I’m just at a loss. She is declining rapidly. I was not able to go last night as I had hoped due to a pretty bad storm. I wasn’t comfortable loading up my other babies for the drive and their drive back especially in the dark. I’m getting ready to go now. Please pray for nova, our travels, just my family as we try to navigate this. For the first time in a while I am having a heavy doom feeling regarding her health and ability to pull through all of this. She’s done nothing but have to fight for her life and I know she is just so tired. Gfm-gofund.me/f3680c0a1 Give send go-givesendgo.com/baby-novas-fi… Cash App- $allthestars92

In this week's episode, @d_n_keane delivers a tour de force of hosting, taking us on a trip back to the beginnings of the detective story, and placing the Murders in the Rue Morgue in the context of its influence on the genre. Share and enjoy!

How beautiful these lines! how worthy of them the gloss!— “Was I deceiv’d, or did a sable cloud Turn forth her silver lining on the night? I did not err, there does a fable cloud Turn forth her silver lining on the night.” —John Milton, Comus “These lines are turned like that verse of Ovid, Fast. L. v. 545. ‘Fallor? An arma sonant? Non fallimur: arma sonabant.’ The repetition, arising from the conviction and confidence of an unaccusing conscience, is inimitably beautiful. … When all succour seems to be lost, heaven unexpectedly presents the silver lining of a sable cloud to the virtuous.” —Thomas Warton

Data centers using human neurons built from stem cells. Not theoretical, but in practice already. What civil commission or religious institution is taking the total reduction of the person to a tortured machine as the crisis it truly is?
Replying to @WeimarWillhelm
Yes, largely true. Cortical Labs' CL1 systems use stem-cell-derived human neurons on electrode arrays, kept alive in sealed life-support units with nutrient media (sugar/salts) refreshed every few days. Biological data centers in Melbourne and Singapore now run racks of them. They've controlled Doom via electrical signals. No evidence of consciousness—just adaptive neural activity.

It's this sort of thing that makes me sympathetic to people who want to WFH. I think we can deliver all the stern lectures we want about this - I def believe most work is best done in the office - but the reality of commuting 👇 and the crippling cost .... strewth.
Euston this evening …. Happy travelling! Let’s hope I make it home tonight.

Reading is one of the best things you can do and costs like $20 for six hours, tops. In many cases it's free. The people who make it possible live in penury and the whole modern economy is organized against it.

I've lived in the same apartment building in Tokyo for 11 years. I know zero names. That's normal here. We nod in the elevator. We do not speak. Then Mike moved in on the third floor. Ohio. Six-foot-four. Laughs like a truck starting up. Day 1: He knocked on every door with a plate of cookies. (In Japan, when you move in, you give your neighbors a small towel. Then you leave. Mike gave cookies. Then he stayed and talked.) Week 1: He knew everyone's name. Including the dog's. Then there was Mrs. Sato on the first floor. She's 84. Her husband passed away ten years ago. She lives alone. In 11 years, I had never heard her voice. Every Tuesday, Mike carried her groceries up the steps. She didn't speak English. He didn't speak Japanese. They talked anyway. Mostly about the photo of her husband by the door. Then one morning, her curtains stayed closed. Mike noticed. Nobody else did. I didn't. He knocked. No answer. He called the building manager. She had fallen the night before. She'd been on the floor all night. She's okay now. But the building isn't the same. People say good morning. The elevator has conversations. Last month, we had our first rooftop potluck. Nobody knew what a potluck was. Mike explained it twice. Mrs. Sato brought 40 rice balls. And then she laughed at something Mike said. That was the first time I ever heard her voice. Mike moved back to Ohio this week. On his last morning, the whole building came down to the lobby. Kids. Grandparents. The dog. Mrs. Sato handed him a box. Inside: one thousand paper cranes. In Japan, you fold a thousand cranes for someone you want to protect. Her hands shake. She had been folding them since the day he found her. Then she said the English sentence she had practiced every day for a week. "Please... come back." Mike was crying too hard to answer in English. So he answered in the Japanese he had been secretly practicing. "Kanarazu kaette kimasu." In Japanese, that doesn't mean "I'll visit." It's what you say when you're coming home.
