Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britainās role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?
On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare.
There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who donāt know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.
As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britainās greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britainās deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again.
This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Hey @BSR_buildsafe, does being unable to get to your flat on the 19th floor of Amesbury Tower count as an emergency? because it happens regularly to Tariq. If it's an emergency why won't you authorise the lift refurbishments? It's been over 18-months like this #getitapproved

Henry Nowak was just 18 years old.
An 18-year-old student who had been stabbed and was fighting for his life.
The recently released police bodycam footage is deeply distressing. As Henry lay bleeding on the ground, handcuffed, he can be heard pleading: "I can't breathe, I've been stabbed."
A police officer replied: "I don't think you have mate."
No family should ever have to watch footage like this involving their son. No parent should have to hear those words.
The primary responsibility for Henry's death lies with the individual who stabbed him. But the footage raises serious and legitimate questions about the response he received in his final moments.
Henry Nowak should have had his cries for help taken seriously. He should have been treated first and foremost as a victim in urgent need of medical assistance.
My thoughts are with Henry's family and friends, who continue to live with an unimaginable loss. They deserve answers, accountability where necessary, and confidence that lessons will be learned.
RIP Henry Nowak.

Arsenal have set the record for the lowest possession percentage for a team playing in a Champions League final (since records began in 2003-04).
The previous lowest record was also Arsenal, set in the 2006 Champions League final, which they played 72 minutes with 10 men.

As a lifelong @UKLabour voter, Kemi could very well swing me. A politician not sitting on the fence. Unequivocally standing up 4 Jews. Not trying 2 placate & pander 2 the Pally mob. Clear message, eloquent & calm.
Would love to know other policies, especially re: public sector.

Sheās astonishingly good. And what I also love is the absence of identity politics. No one sees her as a āblack politicianā like they see Dianne Abbott and others. Sheās just excellent at her job.

It's concerning @TheGreenParty seem unclear on its stance re Sabine Mairey - officially standing as 1 of 3 @Lambethgp candidates for Clapham Town ward
With Ms Mairey removed from its website, is it comfortable for her still to be campaigning in the ward?

In the light of the vicious attack in Golders Green this sort of behaviour is not what residents in Clapham Town expect of someone standing for election to represent their community. With @NeilSalt2019 and @PromJPhillips I will stand up for every voice in our community 2/2 š§µ
