🚨 José Mourinho explains his decision to bench Trent Alexander-Arnold for El Clásico: 🎙️ Interviewer: “José, Trent Alexander-Arnold was left on the bench for the Clásico, while Federico Valverde played at right-back. Was that purely tactical, or are you losing confidence in Trent? Mourinho: “Let me be very clear: I don’t select players because of their reputation. I select players because I trust what they will give me when the game becomes difficult” “Trent has incredible passing ability. Nobody is questioning that. But tell me something: what is the value of a beautiful pass if, five minutes later, your opponent attacks the space you have left behind? At this level, one defensive mistake can destroy 90 minutes of good football” “Against Barcelona, I wanted a right-back who would defend first, win his duels, recover quickly and understand when to take risks. Valverde gives me that intensity. He can run, press, cover the centre and still contribute going forward. I don’t need my right-back to be the most creative player on the pitch if he becomes the opponent’s easiest route to goal” “And if you ask me about Dumfries, he also brings physicality and direct running. These are different profiles, but the question is simple: who gives the team the best balance against this opponent? “Trent must understand something. At Real Madrid, nobody owns a position. Not because of your name, not because of your transfer fee, and certainly not because of what you did at another club. “If I have to choose between a world-class passer and a player I trust to protect my goal in the biggest game, I will choose the player who protects my goal. Every time. “Does Trent have a future here? That depends on Trent. He can improve the defensive side of his game and fight for his place, or he can watch other players take it. The badge will still be here. The starting position might not be.”

🚨 Trey Nyoni on what Andoni Iraola told him before coming on against Brighton: 🎙️ Interviewer: “Trey, you came on for Wirtz after his ankle twist, and your first touch was that crucial clearance inside the box. What did Iraola tell you before you stepped onto the pitch? Trey Nyoni: “He looked me in the eyes and said, ‘Trey, don’t come on here to admire the game. Come on and change it. Be brave, win your battles, and if you have to put your body on the line, do it for the team.’ “Honestly, those words stayed in my head. Florian had to come off, and nobody wanted to see him injured, but I knew I had a job to do. My first touch came in a dangerous moment, and I just thought, ‘Get it out. Protect the goal.’ “After that, I wanted every tackle, every challenge, every second to count. When you’re young, people talk about your potential. But potential means nothing if you can’t be trusted when the pressure is on” “He didn’t send me on to look like a young talent. He sent me on because he trusted me to help Liverpool win. That means everything to me” “And when the final whistle went at 2–0, I was proud. Not because I scored or got the headlines, but because I helped my teammates protect that clean sheet. That’s what playing for this club means.” Interviewer: “Does this show that Iraola is willing to trust Liverpool’s youngsters in the biggest moments? Nyoni: “If you work hard and you’re ready, I don’t think he cares how old you are. He’ll put you in. Then it’s up to you to prove him right”
