For me, feeling lonely is painful. It's a feeling we try to avoid. Naturally, you can feel lonely even if you're in a room full of people. If you don't connect with them, or feel you don't belong.
I guess it depends on how we define pain. I see it as a collective word for any feeling we want to avoid.
