“There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear,” Toni Morrison
Today is the 52nd anniversary of the Rumble in the Jungle. The fight was supposed to happen on September 25th, immediately following the 3-day music festival (September 22–24). George Foreman got cut in training just days before the festival, leaving the organizers stuck.

1968 Miss Europe was held in Zaire. I thought you should know.

Everyone had to wait a full 5 weeks for Foreman's eye to heal. Both fighters stayed in the country training the entire time. When folks talk about Formula One and Ajax vs. Bayern, Zaire 74 was a different level.
Since it is about Zaire, here's a wonderful piece about the DRC that doesn't center on conflict. thebaffler.com/salvos/the-be…

An utterly delicious piece; come for the beer and stay for the state-making. I learned quite a bit along the way.
Add to your weekend read list. @cobbo3
My piece "The Beer Wars" is out in @thebafflermag.

🚨A special farewell for Victor Ozhianvuna ahead of his move to Arsenal in January.
Shamrock Rovers’ Director of Football, Ronan Finn, and Head of Academy, Tony Cousins, shared a special moment with Victor and his family as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.
Victor joined Shamrock Rovers at just seven years old and spent 11 years at the club, progressing through the academy to make his first-team breakthrough at 16.
His representative, Integrity Sports, praised the hard work, trust and dedication of Victor and his family, while thanking everyone at Shamrock Rovers and Arsenal who helped make the move possible.

This is what we call football heritage. So if and his team are serious about football, Spain is the answer not Ajax and Bayern B/C team.
Spain beat Czechia 3-0 to win the Men's U15 World Cup, which means they currently hold all of the following trophies:
▪️ Men’s World Cup
▪️ Women’s World Cup
▪️ Men’s Euros
▪️ Women’s Nations League
▪️ Men’s U19 Euros
▪️ Women’s U19 Euros

They just keep racking them up 🇪🇸🏆
Keep an eye out for this because it adds another bow to Kenya’s arrow in engaging the United States. Kenya has now joined the critical mineral countries, although I don't buy the Chinese pullout line.
Engineering giant Fluor Corp is among a group of mostly US investors vying to develop Kenya's Mrima Hill critical minerals deposit, after two Chinese companies pulled out of the process, Kenya's mining minister told Reuters on Friday. reuters.com/world/africa/flu…
