A website that gets millions of traffic being ran by volunteers and donations, it’s a miracle that it works as well as it does. Completely free, no ads, you can post 500 chapters with 500k words if you want. You people need to learn how websites work
ao3 has got to be money laundering cause that site should not be held together by sticks and glue like it is when they get millions in donations every year

OTW, which runs AO3, publishes annual budgets and IRS Form 990s. Recent revenue ~$800k-$1M in donations, majority for AO3 servers/hosting/equipment. Volunteer-run with $0 salaries. Financials public.

These entitled people get an ad-free, subscription-free very well-built site for no cost, and still bitch about things, as if server, storage, effort, and everything should be free to them.
they done shoved the 400k yall raised for them up their asses
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
OTW publishes detailed annual budget updates and financial reports showing donations primarily fund AO3 servers, maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The October 2026 drive raised $314,539.76; current downtime is due to a security incident response.

ao3 down for possibly four weeks @stray_kids y’all gotta start making out in real life now
I blame this on the normies
We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/
