Wetland flora are vital to both adaptation and mitigation.
Conversely, the loss and degradation of wetlands exacerbates the climate crisis by releasing greenhouse gases and leaving ecosystems, and the people dependent on them, more vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

The Wildlife Research and Training Institute researchers and trainees made a remarkable impact during this year’s World Wetlands Day celebrations held yesterday at Karagita Beach in Naivasha.
Running under the theme, Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future, the event brought together researchers, conservationists, students and the general public.
The trainees participated in an exhibition where they showcased their innovative school project on waste segregation, a critical environmental management practice that promotes responsible waste disposal and recycling.
Through engaging displays and interactive sessions, they educated young learners on how to separate biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable waste, highlighting the impact of proper waste management on wetland ecosystems.
By simplifying complex environmental concepts, the trainees ensured that young learners could easily grasp the importance of proper waste disposal in protecting biodiversity and conserving wetland ecosystems.
At the same time, one of the institute’s researcher, demonstrated the ecological benefits of growing papyrus, a nature-based solution that helps in preventing soil erosion, providing wildlife habitats, filtering pollutants, regulating floods, and sequestering carbon, which play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
Participation of our trainees in such exhibitions is a testament to the Institute’s commitment to equipping students with practical research skills necessary for the job market.
By engaging in fieldwork, the trainees gain hands-on experience in environmental conservation, community engagement, and scientific communication—critical skills for careers in wildlife research, environmental education, and ecological management.
