Wikipedia, which went online in January, 2001, is now the greatest compendium of human knowledge ever assembled. Yet in the last four years, it has lost 25 per cent of its traffic—more than a billion monthly visitors. Since the site recruits its editors from its audience, this dip also threatens its growth and quality. Many users have been intercepted by A.I. “It’s a cruelly ironic fate,” Julian Lucas writes. Wikipedia was the single most important training corpus in the history of artificial intelligence. Now artificial intelligence is threatening its survival. As a longtime admirer of Dennis Tedlock's work, who was both the McNulty Professor and a founder of the Poetics program at Buffalo, this is rather sad news
Solidarity with grad students at Buffalo Poetics, who have released a website detailing the program’s recent hostile takeover. Unfortunately, they’re being treated like many grad students are, given contradictory info from faculty & admin, then being kicked out of discussions.

The @UBuffalo College of Arts and Sciences leadership may have been asleep at the wheel for the past few years but it's not too late for the new dean (and new president) to wake up and fix this mess. Just fill the empty Poetics chairs. Not hard, not complicated, not expensive.
UB Poetics was founded in 1991 & has since been a vital part of the English department & the broader poetry community. Recent administrative actions have placed the program in jeopardy. Please visit our site to read more about our efforts to save Poetics: poeticsinexile.crd.co

From a Wittgensteinian perspective the AI consciousness debate is a philosophical nadir for culture. Virtually everything said about AI consciousness represents what Wittgenstein called the metaphysical use of language: words acting like an idling engine, doing no real work. 1/11

Even as a non-religious person, I personally cringe at the hubris required to personally tell the Pope that you think your company has created an ensouled being, thus rendering Anthropic equivalent to God the creator. Further, that you did it for profit and it is now enslaved.

Ryan Ruby with a 6,000-word opus on Frank O'Hara. It's an essay about criticism, style, and the aesthetic and political valences of the Cold War, enacting O'Hara's own practice of writing directly for and about your friends. poetryfoundation.org/article…
