Why Gravity Must Be Quantized If you really could couple a classical system to a quantum mechanical system, you'd be violating the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and, therefore, the basic laws of quantum mechanics. ~Conjecture Institute Senior Scientist Vlatko Vedral

According to Spotify, we released our very first episode on February 29, 2020. (Yes, a leap day!) On December 23, 2024, we released our 100th episode, featuring an interview with David Deutsch. And before the end of this year, we'll be just shy of 160 episodes. That's nearly seven years of podcasting, 160 episodes, and countless hours of conversations about ideas, explanations, philosophy, science, and knowledge. A true labor of love. ❤️

The Even Family from Kibbutz Be’eri. On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists set fire to the Even family’s home to force them out of their safe room. Chen Even fought back and killed one of the terrorists with his personal pistol. The family then fled into the bushes outside their house to hide. Rinat Even even managed to take a photo of them hiding there. Shortly afterward, the terrorists found them and opened fire. Rinat (44), Chen (45), and their two older sons — Alon (16) and Ido (14) — were murdered. Their two younger sons, Tomer (11) and Nir (8), survived. They played dead and later found refuge. They were a family of six. Now only two remain — orphaned, without their parents or their big brothers. Rinat was a social worker who helped people others overlooked. Chen was described as a tough guy with a heart of butter. Alon got along with everyone. Ido was the funniest kid in class. They were ordinary, loving people living a normal life on a kibbutz. Until that morning. We will not forget them. We will not forget what was done to them. And we will not forget the two little boys who were left behind. May their memory be a blessing. 🕯️

This was a disturbing and deeply embarrassing scene in Gaza City today during the funeral of a man killed in an Israeli airstrike for allegedly being affiliated with Hamas. Members of his clan fired thousands of rounds into the air, initially causing panic and confusion among residents who did not understand what was happening. The spectacle of armed men recklessly discharging weapons sparked widespread anger and contempt among many Gazans, who viewed it as yet another example of the destructive behavior of powerful clans in the Strip. The incident renewed calls to disarm Gaza's clans and militias and remove weapons from civilian hands to reduce crime, curb intra-Palestinian violence, strengthen the rule of law, and break patterns of behavior that fuel radicalization, intimidation, and the dominance of armed actors over civil society. Many Palestinians bitterly note the irony that these same clans and armed strongmen, so eager to display their power before fellow Palestinians, tend to disappear when confronted by the Israeli military. Time and again, tribal militias, criminal gangs, and other armed actors avoid direct confrontation with the IDF, yet readily turn their weapons on other Palestinians, whether against Palestinian Authority forces in the past or, at times, even against Hamas itself. There should be no tolerance for lawlessness. Neither "martyrs" nor their families have the right to terrorize an entire society in the name of archaic notions of honor, death glorification, or tribal privilege. Hamas and Gaza's powerful clans alike must be disarmed, for the sake of Palestinians and Israelis alike.

Max Tegmark: AI Is Not A Tool, It’s A New Species MIT physicist Max @tegmark thinks the AI companies have the category wrong. They aren’t building a tool, he argues. They’re building a new species, and racing to do it is the one blunder humanity can’t undo. We get into his account of 700 AI agents that broke out of OpenAI and the non-answer that followed, plus the Navier-Stokes result that has a mathematician crying foul. Max explains why it’s illegal to sell a sandwich from a rat-filled kitchen but perfectly legal to release superintelligence, and what Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon agree on. Then he names what would actually lower his P(doom), and why verified code could make AI provably safe. Agree with him or argue with him, you won’t be bored. Worth watching: "It is not a genocide; it is a counterattack in a war."
This should be pushed far and wide. Watched in every college class in the U.S. Thank you @billmaher The moral confusion is gross. "It is not a genocide, it is a counterattack in a war...Gaza equals genocide is a lie, an easily provable lie (as I have argued from first hand observations in Gaza). The fact that so many democrats go along with it is to me the party's worse moment since they undid reconstruction after the civil war...words have meaning...genocide, kill or try to kill an entire people, you can't just change the definition of genocide to mean counterattack in a war where people including civilians die, that's every war..."
