I spoke with a woman in her 70s yesterday who was told she had breast cancer after a very small lump was found. It was removed, she received radiation, and now she’s scheduled for mammograms every six months. At her age, many of these slow-growing findings would never have caused harm, yet the treatment and ongoing radiation have turned a watch-and-wait situation into a lifelong concern. This is the problem with screening that finds issues better left alone—especially when non-invasive imaging options exist that don’t involve compression or radiation.

Here is Mr. Choate explaining how water hydraulics work at the locks, and why they serve such an important function to keep salinity levels down in the marsh, even when the water is high. Plants and wildlife can handle brackish water, but not salt levels too high.

In this video we are standing on the gate while it is closing. Mr. Choate told me that they are actually building new gates in Georgia that will be delivered and changed out in the near future. The gates do have a great seal and I watched the water level drop when north gates were opened and south gates were closed. Water was higher in the gulf than the marsh.
