For a pilot struggling with depression, fear of losing the right to fly may also become a barrier to seeking help. In our recently published letter, “Of Cockpits and Psychotropics,” we discuss the need for clear Indian guidelines on antidepressant treatment and fitness to fly. Drawing on international approaches, we call for a transparent pathway involving careful assessment, clinical stability, specialist review and continued monitoring, alongside confidential, nonpunitive support. Making it easier to seek treatment and setting clear standards for a safe return to flying: can support both pilots’ mental health and passenger safety. #PilotMentalHealth #AviationSafety #Psychiatry #MedX Of Cockpits and Psychotropics: The Need for Guidelines Addressing Mental Health Conditions in the Indian Aviation Industry ovid.com/10.4103/jopsys.jops…

Happy birthday, Virat Kohli! 👑 @imVkohli There have been better batsmen before him. There may be better batsmen around today, and there will be more in the future. But there will never be another King who taught us to never give up. To chase our dreams even when there’s only a 1% chance. To keep fighting when giving up feels easier. Because some battles are fought not for victory, but simply to show that someone stood their ground on the battlefield. Happy birthday, KING. Thank you for teaching us to keep believing. ❤️ #HappyBirthdayViratKohli #KingKohli #ViratKohli𓃵

29 for India to win, 31 for Kohli’s century. Come on, #Shubman, please practise for Test matches today! You have no idea how many duas you’ll get if Kohli reaches his hundred, Gill! 😂🙏 #ViratKohli #INDvsNZ

Heard Simon Doull and Shane Bond discussing the device on #ShubmanGill ‘temple’. They seemed puzzled and mentioned they hadn’t seen anything like it. Made me curious too: what additional insights could an athlete get from it beyond what @WHOOP already tracks., heart rate, HRV, sleep, recovery, strain, respiratory rate, SpO₂ and skin temperature? @grok @temple @deepigoyal #INDvsNZ

This brings to mind Prof. Salman Akhtar’s chapter “The Trauma of Geographical Dislocation: Leaving, Arriving, Mourning, and Becoming” in The Geography of Meanings, an interesting psychoanalytic take on migration, loss and identity. Although it is centred on migration, it also makes one understand on why we travel, what unfamiliar places mean to us, and how being away from home changes the way we see ourselves. Do read it if you’re curious about what our journeys might tell us about our inner world. taylorfrancis.com/books/edit… P.S. If anyone can access the full PDF, please do share. #MedX #MedTwitter
Travel, perhaps, introduces us to who we could become! You discover that- ->Your way of doing things is not the only correct way. ->People can live fulfilling lives with completely different values. ->Uncertainty does not necessarily mean danger. ->Discomfort does not always require immediate escape. In multiple longitudinal studies- Travelling was associated with increased Openness to Experience and Agreeableness, and decreased Neuroticism!

Had an interesting argument with a relative today. He said his friend’s son had been selected for “AIIMS Udaipur.” I insisted, “You mean AIIMS Jodhpur! There’s no other AIIMS in Rajasthan.” After some back and forth and a Google search, I realised he meant the “American International Institute of Medical Sciences,” Udaipur. He, too, had understood it as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Apparently, “AIIMS Udaipur” is commonly used in local circle. We’d spent all that time debating the location when we should’ve started with the full form. 🤭

One noteworthy case was a young adult presenting to psychiatry with longstanding aggression and impulsivity. He had suffered a stroke in infancy, f/b childhood seizures and persistent left hemiparesis. MRI showed right cerebral hemiatrophy, gliosis, calvarial thickening and right frontal sinus hyperpneumatisation. He was dx with organic personality disorder. Key learning: Developmental history and neurological examination can provide crucial clues when behavioural symptoms dominate the presentation.
Ive seen 3 of them during residency!! I was pleasantly shocked!

The early cerebral injury likely disrupted networks involved in behavioural inhibition and emotional regulation, contributing to the aggression and impulsivity. #MedX #MedTwitter #Psychiatry #Neuroscience

Four years ago today, we witnessed something beyond explanation. #Kohli #82* at #Melbourne, where courage met faith, and human effort met grace. 🇮🇳🏏 My reflections on that evening and its lessons beyond cricket! #MCG #ViratKohli𓃵 Do give it a read if it interests you! medium.com/@rahulmathur_1693…

Last year around this time I was posted in a ward with significantly higher morbidity and mortality rates than what I was accustomed to and could deal with. Not doing that posting was obviously not an option, unlike selecting MD where avoidance works. I tried to look for any, if at all, silver lining, and I realised that since it was a shift based posting- I could turn my brain off at 5pm to the dot. Unlike my original ward- Psychiatry- where I could get calls at any time of the day or night, this was not the case in this particular posting. I only had to carry the morbidity and mortality till 5PM. Sometimes 6. So I started painting after my shift would get over, with some nice music in the background(personally partial to Bach, maybe Brahms)- to make sure my mind wouldnt replay the events of the day shift of my life during that time. I eventually did finish some 3 canvasses during that month, but 1 was left unfinished as the posting got over, and I got busy with life. I tried to pick it up about thrice over the last 1 year, but simply couldn’t push myself to finish it. Anyway- heres the finished painting. It took me over a year of procrastination to finally complete it. And less than 6 hours in total. Going forward, I promise to understand and look kindly at the part of my patients lives where they really REALLY want to follow certain advices, want to pursue hobbies, but cannot, because of procrastination or the illness itself. For life is a better teacher than textbooks, atleast when it comes to empathy. 🙂 (Acrylics on canvas)

Went to a nearby corporate hospital for a family member’s routine checkup, I started entering a lift absentmindedly and was immediately stopped by the guard “For Doctors Only!” I almost spat out a “How Dare You! I AM A DOCTOR” before remembering I am not, in this hospital 💀

Last week, on my angel daughter’s birthday, I wrote about the bravest little soul I have ever known. She lived for just one day, but changed our lives forever. It is about love, grief, courage, and how some lives are measured not by time, but by the impact they leave behind.
