I watched Trump’s speech at the Correspondents’ Dinner last night.
It’s hard to articulate how sad it made me.
Sad and embarrassed and exhausted.
Here is the thing about a man who is a joke. He can’t tell one.
People think humor is a talent. It isn’t. It’s a capacity. To make someone laugh you have to be able to laugh at yourself, and to laugh at yourself you have to step outside of yourself and see what everyone else sees. For one second you have to be just another person in the room.
Most people can do this by the time they are nine years old.
He has never once managed it. Not in fifty years of cameras. Not for a second.
That is not a quirk. It is a symptom. The muscle that lets you tell a joke is the same one that lets you feel what another person feels. A man who cannot survive being laughed at cannot imagine being anyone but himself. He will only ever be generous when it is photographed. He will only ever be kind when it is filmed.
There is a name for it.
So he stood up there and did what he always does. He hit down. He made jokes about people’s weight. He made jokes about their intelligence. He made jokes about how women look. He read out the names of people he doesn’t like, and mocked them. Always mocking. And when no one laughed he blamed his speech writers.
The cruelty dressed as humor has worn so thin.
And for the 30% of you still in the cult who will inevitably call me a crackhead and blame it all on my Dad, all I can say is please, for the love of God, open your eyes. Wake the fuck up. Have some dignity. Have some pride.
Joe Biden wasn’t standing at that podium last night. Donald Trump was.
And at the end of it he put on a red hat that said Trump 2028 and told the room he was running again. No one laughed because everyone knows he has no intention of leaving.
Just another joke at our expense.

Trump voters don’t like it when I call them idiots, and you’ll be surprised to learn that I don’t actually give a flying fuck if they like it or not.
Because, if you voted for the guy who golfed while thousands of Americans died a day and said “it is what it is” when asked because he “cares about your safety”, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who handed a massive tax cut to the richest of the rich and in so doing, saddled our country with the third largest amount of debt we’ve ever had because he was “strong on the economy”, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who was the WORST jobs president since Hoover because he will “lower unemployment”, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who’s going to slap 25% tariffs on goods coming from our neighbors to the north and south, not to mention China, because you think he will lower prices, you are an idiot.
If you voted the guy who overturned Roe Vs Wade because the government has no business mandating what you do with your own body, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who is going to pull us out of NATO and hand Ukraine to Putin because you remember what our country’s greatest generation fought and died for, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who stole classified documents, lied about them, showed them to his pals, and hid them in his fucking bathroom, because you care about our national security, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who is going to deport all of the low income immigrants who work the jobs white people refuse to, because you thought he was going to help your farm, meat processing plant or construction business spend less and make more, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who is going to repeal the Affordable Care Act with no replacement, because you thought your preexisting condition was covered under OBAMACARE, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the thrice married, serial philandering, sexual assault bragging, racist, sexist, xenophobe who mocked a disabled reporter and made fun of a man’s stutter, because you care about decency, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the heathen who spends his Sundays worshipping at Our Lady of the Perpetual Mulligan and can’t cite a single passage from the Bibles he’s selling because you think he is devout, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the “suckers” and “losers” five time draft dodger who tried and failed to gut the VA because you support our troops, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who said he’d make Mexico pay for the wall, when they didn’t, bring manufacturing back, when he didn’t, pass an infrastructure bill, when he didn’t, end the opioid crisis, when he didn’t, drain the swamp, when he didn’t, or “make America great again” when he didn’t even in the least, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the felon, business fraud because your pro-law and order, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the adjudicated rapist because you’re the party of family values, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who incited a deadly attack on our Capitol in order to stay in the office he was voted out of because you care about democracy, you are an idiot.
If you voted for the guy who is promising to be a dictator on day one because you think our country could really use one of those and that you and your high school level education and shitty job and miserable fucking existence will somehow end up on top of Mt. Oligarch and not on the bottom with the rest of your MAGA flag flying pals, you are an idiot.
If you’re a girl dad who voted for a man who has been found liable of sexual abuse and has surrounded himself with a sea of unrepentant, unapologetic sexual offenders because you want to protect your daughter, you are an idiot.
If you think he’s not going to do all the truly terrible things he’s promising, or even worse, that you’re hoping he does - you are a fucking idiot.
And you don’t have to like me saying that, but it doesn’t make it any less fucking true.

So when Trump fires all non-partisan career professionals in government, replaces them with radical loyalists within every nook and cranny of the US government, and adds radical judges everywhere.
And every one of you that voted for him finally wake up from your fucked up fantasy just like the folks that woke up after 4 years of the last shit show, only to realize it’s much much worse, and much more permanent, this time.
When the cancer you caused has infected every bit of the American system and it can’t be unwound for a lifetime.
What then?
Do you beg this country for forgiveness for choosing fascism because you were conned into believing your eggs are too expensive because of Joe Biden?
You just put Steve Bannon in charge of American policy.
You just put Michael Flynn in charge of our military.
You just put Alex Jones in charge of media and propaganda.
You just put Stephen Miller in charge of immigration policy.
You just put batshit crazy RFK Jr. in charge of health policy.
You just killed free public education and privatized schools, which you will have to pay for.
You just sealed the deal on a national abortion ban, because you’re demented if you think it’s not coming.
You just radicalized the Supreme Court for a generation.
You just made women less safe and less free.
You just made this country an oligarchy with the billionaires quite literally in charge now.
You just put in office the one person that believes a president is a king, with the fucking Supreme Court ruling to prove it in his back pocket!
You just ushered in Fascism.
Because your cereal costs more.
Congratulations.

BREAKING: The former chief marketer for NBC apologizes to the American people for giving us Donald Trump by helping to sell “The Apprentice” myth to the American people.
This is humiliating for MAGA…
“I want to apologize to America. I helped create a monster,” writes John D. Miller in a piece entitled “We Created a Monster: Trump Was a TV Fantasy Invented for 'The Apprentice'” for U.S. News & World Report.
“For nearly 25 years, I led marketing at NBC and NBCUniversal,” Miller explains. “I led the team that marketed ‘The Apprentice,’ the reality show that made Donald Trump a household name outside of New York City, where he was better known for overextending his empire and appearing in celebrity gossip columns.”
He goes on to state that his team “created the narrative that Trump was a super-successful businessman who lived like royalty” which was a “substantial exaggeration” that “created a false narrative by making him seem more successful than he was.”
Miller points out that Trump had to declare bankruptcy four times before the show premiered and at least twice over the course of its 14 seasons.
“The imposing board room where he famously fired contestants was a set, because his real boardroom was too old and shabby for TV,” writers Miller.
In a section that is certain to bruise Trump’s ego, Miller states that he was the “perfect choice” for the show because “more successful CEOs were too busy to get involved in reality TV and didn’t want to hire random game show winners onto their executive teams.”
Meanwhile, Trump “had no such concerns” and “plenty of time for filming.”
“I never imagined that the picture we painted of Trump as a successful businessman would help catapult him to the White House,” writes Miller, likening all of their advertising around the show to “fake news” because it was so “highly exaggerated.”
“I discovered in my interactions with him over the years that he is manipulative, yet extraordinarily easy to manipulate,” he goes on. “He has an unfillable compliment hole. No amount is too much. Flatter him and he is compliant. World leaders, including apparently Russian strongman Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, have discovered that too.”
Miller calls Trump “remarkably thin-skinned” and describes his adversarial relationship with the show. The future president would claim that the show was number one in the ratings, even when the numbers refuted that claim.
Not surprisingly, Trump was full of bad suggestions for the show. He wanted to make “a team of Black players compete against white players.” Miller tried to convince him against it by appealing to Trump’s greed and telling him that it would alienate sponsors.
“While we were successful in marketing ‘The Apprentice,’ we also did irreparable harm by creating the false image of Trump as a successful leader. I deeply regret that,” writers Miller. “And I regret that it has taken me so long to go public.”
“Now America is facing a critical choice. Should this elderly, would-be emperor with no clothes, who is well known for stretching and abandoning the truth, be president again?” he asks.
“I spent 50 years successfully promoting television magic, making mountains out of molehills every day,” he continues. “But I say now to my fellow Americans, without any promotional exaggeration: If you believe that Trump will be better for you or better for the country, that is an illusion, much like ‘The Apprentice’ was.”
“Even if you are a born-and-bred Republican, as I was, I strongly urge you to vote for Kamala Harris. The country will be better off and so will you,” concludes Miller.

Donald Trump’s answer tonight on what he’ll do to bring down groceries:
“So we have to start always with energy.
Always. I don't want to be boring about it but there's no bigger subject. It covers everything. If you make donuts, if you make cars, whatever you make, energy's a big deal. And we're gonna get that — it's my ambition to get your energy bill within 12 months down 50%. If I can do that we've done a hell of a job. 5-0. Not 15, 50.
Interest rates are going to follow. And actually they're going to follow for another reason. The economy is now not good. And interest rates — you'll see, they'll do the rate cut and all the political stuff tomorrow. Will he do half a point, will he do a quarter of a point. But the reason is because the economy's not good. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to do it. But we're gonna get interest rates down. And we gotta work with our farmers. Our farmers are being decimated right now. They're being absolutely, absolutely decimated. And one of the reasons is we allow a lot of farm product into our country. We're gonna have to be a little bit like other countries. We're not gonna allow so much come — we're gonna let our farmers go to work. And I don't know if you remember. I love the farmers. Because I had many meetings as president. I had this gorgeous room with this beautiful table that seats about 35 people. And I was with the farmers. Usually everybody wants something. They all want subsidy. But I was with the farmers. And I think you might've been there actually Sarah. I said look, we're gonna get you such a beautiful subsidy, meaning I'm gonna do things. And one of the people raised his hand, 'Sir, honestly, we don't want a subsidy. That's the first time that's ever happened to me! Everyone wants — they want money, they want to build windmills, we want money for these windmills, ay-yai-yai. Anyway. But you know what? It was amazing. He said, almost tears in his eyes, they were getting decimated. 'We don't want a subsidy. We just want a fair level playing field! And I said nobody's ever said that. And I have many industries, they do all different things. It's probably the most dramatic l've ever seen. He didn't want anything. All he wanted was to be able to compete fairly. And the problem we have is other countries, they treat us very badly in that way, also. They really are. And sometimes the worst countries are our so-called allies. I say so-called because in many ways they're not allies at all. They take advantage of us. They really take advantage. But we're gonna do with the farmers, we're gonna do what we have to do with the farmers, we're gonna put our farmers - and do you remember the expression? When I was negotiating with China, China said well we're not gonna deal with this. Because they never had anybody to negotiate. They did whatever they want. They just took us, like, for a bunch of suckers. But I told the farmers it's gonna be very good negotiators, you're gonna suffer for six months and then they're gonna fold. And that's exactly what happened... So interest rates, energy and common sense.”
