Then she walked past me into my kitchen like she'd been there a hundred times and started opening cabinets in search of a serving spoon. I should have thrown her out. Instead I watched her set the table for two, because I was too busy noticing the details: the way she'd checked the window locks on her way in, the way she kept glancing at the clock above the stove. "Eat," she said. "It's tuna noodle. It's the only thing my husband ever trusted me to make." Deb finally sat down and pulled off her oven mitts. "Because three years ago, the same people did it to me," she said. "My daughter's voice, begging me to wire money. I almost did. Someone in this neighborhood tipped me off before I lost everything, and I promised I'd pay it forward." She slid a folded paper across the table: a list of numbers, a script to follow, and a code word to agree on with anyone I loved. The text came at 8:24, exactly as predicted. Honey I'm locked out, please come get me, hurry. I didn't answer it. Instead I called my real mother's sister in Phoenix, and when my mom picked up, sleepy and confused and perfectly fine, I started to cry. Deb nodded, took a bite of her casserole, and slid the pepper shaker toward me like nothing had happened. "Welcome to the neighborhood," she said. "Now we pick the code word."
