Dave Doeren on the NC State and Raleigh media: "Since so many of the media have so nicely and eloquently critiqued me over my 14 years, I wanted to do a nice reporter-by-reporter critique back to you. I was going to go through your names one by one and put your pictures up and have T-shirts about all of you, but I decided not to do that. "But maybe later in a podcast down by the river with bottle of bourbon, that's going to happen." Definitely looking forward to this...

Bob Gibson was named MVP of the 1964 World Series and awarded a new Corvette as a prize. A few days after the series ended, Gibson was driving from St. Louis back to Omaha, when he was pulled over by a cop in a small Missouri town. The cop demanded to see the Title of the car. Gibson didn’t have one, he explained, because the car was brand new. Gibson asked the cop why he’d been stopped and the cop said there had been a report of a stolen Corvette just like the one Gibson was driving. Bob Gibson couldn’t restrain himself and blurted out: “Bullshit.” Bob Gibson told the cop he just didn’t think a Black man could come by such an expensive car honestly. Gibson showed the cop his license and told him he was the Cardinal pitcher who’d just pitched the winning game in the World Series. The cop let him go. Gibson sold the Corvette. Forty years later, Robbie Tolan, the son of Gibson’s friend and former team-mate, Bobby Tolan, was driving home with his cousin from a late-night visit to the local Jack-in-the-Box in Bellaire, Texas, a predominately white suburb of Houston known as the: “City of Homes.” Robbie Tolan was himself a minor league player for the Bay Area Toros, a minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals based in Texas City. As Robbie and his cousin got out of the car in the Tolan family’s driveway, the two young men were surrounded by cops, pointing flashlights and guns at them. The police ordered Tolan to the ground. At this point, Bobby Tolan and his wife emerged from their house and asked what was going on. One of the cops said that Robbie and his cousin were suspected of driving a stolen car. Then another cop car pulled up driven by Officer Jeffrey Cotton, a 10-year veteran of the department. But instead of calming the situation, Officer Cotton confronted Robbie’s mother Marie, who was trying to explain that Robbie had driven his own car to his family home. But Cotton wasn’t hearing it and shoved her against the wall of the house. Robbie Tolan, who was lying prone at the time, began to rise and was almost immediately shot by Cotton, the bullet piercing his lung and liver. Officer Cotton later claimed that Tolan had been reaching for a gun. But Tolan was unarmed and an analysis of the shooting showed that Robbie had been on all fours facing the ground when he was shot in the back. Cotton was charged with aggravated assault and some lesser offenses, but was quickly acquitted of all charges by a jury of 10 whites and two Blacks. Robbie Tolan survived but never played baseball again. A settlement was reached with the City of Bellaire for $110,000. His father Bobby Tolan, became Tony Gwynn’s first and favorite hitting coach. February 11, 1937, in the Ozark Mountains, Arkansas. The Harris family had lived in this cave since 1935. The bank took their farm. The cave was dry, 58 degrees year-round, and free. William Harris, 36, built the rock fireplace and shelves. His wife Martha, 33, cooked on it. Their children were John, 10; Mary, 8; Clara, 6; Paul, 12; and baby Ruth asleep on the quilt. The lantern was kerosene. The shelves held beans, flour, and lard. The quilt on the wall was from Martha’s mother. The wood was cut by the boys. William worked on the WPA road crew for $21 a month. Martha took in laundry. They lived here until 1939 when William got a job at the dam. Paul died in Korea in 1951. John kept this photo. He said, “We were poor. But we were warm. And we were together.” The cave is on private land now. The fireplace is still there.

June 6, 1944. An American paratrooper jumps into Normandy in the dark and lands on the roof of a church. By the end of the war he had been declared dead, held a funeral he didn't attend, escaped the Nazis, and fought his way toward Berlin in a Soviet tank unit. His name was Joseph Beyrle. He's believed to be the only American soldier to serve in both the US Army and the Red Army during World War Two. Beyrle was from Muskegon, Michigan. He joined the 101st Airborne, the Screaming Eagles. His buddies called him Jumpin' Joe. On D-Day night his plane was hit by flak and he jumped early. He came down on a church roof, slid off, and lost his unit in the chaos. For a few days he fought on his own, blowing up a power station and cutting German communications. Then he was captured. Here's where it gets strange. A German soldier ended up wearing Beyrle's uniform and dog tags. That German was killed. When the body was found, the Americans identified it as Joseph Beyrle. The army told his parents their son was dead. His hometown held a funeral mass for him. His obituary ran in the local paper. Meanwhile, he was very much alive, being moved from one German prison camp to another. He escaped more than once. One time he and two other prisoners jumped off a train heading east. They thought they were heading for Russia and freedom. They got lost and ended up in Berlin, where they were caught by the Gestapo, beaten, and tortured. In January 1945, from a camp in eastern Germany, he finally made a clean escape. He went east, toward the gunfire. Toward the Soviets. When he found a Soviet tank unit, he walked out with his hands up, holding a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes, and shouted the only Russian he knew. American comrade. It worked. He asked to join them. And they said yes. For about a month, an American paratrooper rode with Soviet tank crews as they pushed toward Germany. He used his demolition training. He fought. He was reportedly welcomed by a Soviet officer who was one of the rare women commanding a tank battalion. Then a German dive bomber attacked. Beyrle was badly wounded. He was evacuated to a Soviet hospital. Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov reportedly visited, heard his story, and gave him papers to get to the American embassy in Moscow. When he showed up, the embassy didn't believe him. As far as the US was concerned, Joseph Beyrle was dead. They held him under guard until his fingerprints proved who he was. He made it home to Michigan in April 1945. In 1946 he got married. In the same church where they'd held his funeral. Decades later, in 1994, he was honored at the White House by President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin for serving both countries. And the last twist. His son, Joseph Beyrle II, grew up to become the United States Ambassador to Russia.

Joseph Robert “Joe” Beyrle had two sons. The elder son, Joe Beyrle II, served during the Vietnam War, but wasn’t a US Ambassador. That was the other son, John Beyrle. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Be…

I’m biased. I think you’re an idiot already just because you have voL in your name. So here, let @JoshPateCFB explain why you’re a dummy for evoking the “Vegas” excuses and conspiracy
As a head football coach, why would you even voluntarily bring this up? Just makes you sound overly guilty just like your other coach this week, running your mouth. You got bailed 4 years ago, and you got bailed tonight. Vegas had your back buddy

While at Texas, Steve McMichael filled in at kicker and went 8/10 on extra points and 2/3 on field goals. Then he won a Super Bowl, joined the Four Horsemen, got ejected from Wrigley Field by Angel Hernandez for calling him blind, and made the Hall of Fame. That’s a career.

After going thru a gauntlet that included some of the best DTs in the league in Barmore, Graham, Buckner, Lawrence & Vea I can confidently say…. Zach Frazier is the best center in the NFL. There are some other really good ones out there in Creed, McCoy & others but I’ll take 54 all day long! #HereWeGo
"I already thought he was one of the best. I officially now think he is the best." @TraiDay79 has some HIGH praise for the Steelers' Center, Zach Frazier. #HereWeGo

SOURCES: Following the firing of Michael Locksley, I’m told James Franklin has emerged as a serious candidate for the Maryland job. Franklin accepted the Virginia Tech job last year in order to rehab his image at a G5 program, knowing his dream school would soon open up.
