Such an important point. (And kudos to the whole @CheckSheriff Coalition for keeping the heat up on this issue.) Villanueva is not an outlier. We've had a string of bad sheriffs. He's just the most abrasive and the one mostly likely to say the quiet part out loud.
LA has a long history of abusive Sheriffs. From Jim McDonnell collaborating with ICE to terrorize families, to Lee Baca kidnapping an FBI informant to cover up LASD crimes.
That's why I went to a @CheckSheriff rally to support Measure A, which will finally hold them accountable.
Last year, about 40% of the LA County jail’s total population had a diagnosed mental illness, compared with about 27% back in 2012.
This is what happens when we have failed to invest enough money in mental health care and community alternatives to incarceration.
The LA County jail system isn’t just the biggest in the country; it’s the biggest in the world, incarcerating upward of 14,600 people this month.

This is chilling: LA County supervisor Sheila Kuehl, one of the most outspoken critics of Sheriff Alex Villanueva, woke up to sheriff's deputies swarming her doorstep with a "warrant to search the house which has no information in it at all"

Family members in our coalition deal with constant daily harassment from LASD.
What happened yesterday is a new low but community members have been facing LASD’s harassment & intimidation tactics – including from @LACoSheriff himself – for years. #LASDgangs

🚨LA County Jail Lawsuit🚨
Most people in our jail system are recently arrested & have not been convicted. They are routinely denied clean water, functioning toilets, a shower, adequate food, or medication they need. @ACLU_SoCal has sued the county.
