Because the BLM apparently plans to focus on removing younger horses, the palomino mare shown in this video is among those likely to be slated for capture. Known as Encore, she is the look-alike daughter of Cloud, the stallion made famous by a series of popular PBS documentaries.
The agency-set population target for the Pryors is 107-120 horses. As of spring, there were an estimated 187 there before new foals. As part of the roundup, the BLM does plan to treat about 43 additional mares and release them back onto the range.
RTF has long advocated for the immediate use of proven, safe, and humane fertility control as a key tool to slow (not stop) wild horse and burro population growth, to replace capture and removal as the BLM’s primary method of management.
Return to Freedom continues to stress to agency leadership that spending tax dollars to remove wild horses from the Pryors is wasteful and unnecessary given that the herd is so easily accessed to administer fertility control.
🧵Wild horses are shown here as they should be. Unfortunately, the Bureau of Land Management has decided to capture and remove from the 36,000-acre range in the days ahead about 40 wild horses from one of the most beloved herds in the West.
