An otherworldly view from an airplane window of glowing clouds as the sun dips below them at sunset.
Congratulations to @KarlDeisseroth and @StanfordMed.
Their discovery and development of a gene that enables cells to respond to light could enable the biological software equivalent of the transistor.
My mind boggles at the possibilities.
What a great time to be alive!
Today @KarlDeisseroth of @StanfordMed @Stanford won the @NobelPrize for his co-discovery & development of Optogenetics. Here he explains what that is, and how it is unlocking the secrets of brain function & helping to cure diseases.
(And he explains that in ~1min).
Are these the most wonderful, relaxed and patient travellers in the world?
Yesterday, after the seat belt signs extinguished at Nukus airport, Uzbekistan, everyone remained seated until the front door opened.
It’s their culture.
Friendly, relaxed, polite, Nirvana!

Iconic Australian public spaces (used by all Australians) should be preserved for all Australians.
@SteveKamperMP, NSW Minister responsible for land-claims system, please act to protect important community assets and represent public interests.

Aboriginal Land Councils have 44,000 land claims lodged across NSW, including claims over iconic public assets such as Bondi Icebergs and land associated with Sydney beach surf clubs.
These places are enjoyed by Australians from all backgrounds.

It's not about a beach or tennis centre.
It's about protecting public community lands near you - before they are threatened.

A much bigger question:
What happens when land used-valued by all Australian becomes subject to claims that could remove it from public use?
Public parks, sporting facilities, beaches and community spaces are precious and most cannot be replaced.

Now, Talis St Reserve, NSW’s busiest public tennis facility (62k players/yr) has been given an eviction notice, with a proposal initially lodged to replace the eight courts with a high-rise apartment development.

Airbus has spotless assembly lines and test acft, including this replacement A380 test acft (replacing MSN 1).
When full of fuel, the wingtips on MSN 1 bent down and outwards, exceeding the Code F aircraft wingspan 80m limit! All subsequent acft had wing tips bent inwards!
Here's your dose of #MondayMotivation! ✈️
Sporting its new flight test livery, #A380 MSN 114 treated us to a special low pass over Toulouse 🇫🇷 last Friday. This aviation icon has been chosen to test the future propulsion system for our next-generation single-aisle aircraft.

#OTD in 1963, Joe Walker made his last X-15 flight—and set an altitude record while he was at it. He took the North American X-15 to 354,300 feet (67 miles). Walker was posthumously awarded astronaut wings in 2005.
Another chaotic day at Sydney Airport. Airservices notifying us at 7:38 this morning of 36m avg delay for 639 aircraft.
Poor redundancy => poor resilience for airlines, tourism & business aviation.
For Airservices to be trusted, we need more transparency & communications.
One of the best videos you will see of an unexpected entry into a spin, and immediate and successful recovery from the spin.
Every pilot must be able to recite (and armchair execute) the spin recovery.
FLY!
This footage is absolutely wild🔥🤯
A skydiver outside a Beechcraft C90 King Air captured the plane stalling and spinning right next to them during a jump run at 16,000 ft over Mossel Bay, South Africa in October 2021.
Too many jumpers hanging in the “float” position outside the door shifted the center of gravity aft and blanked airflow over the left horizontal stabilizer. The nose pitched up past the elevator’s authority, the wing dropped, and it entered a spin. The pilot (who later posted a detailed account) cut power, centralized the controls, applied opposite rudder, and recovered cleanly. Plane and all the jumpers made it back fine.
The camera work is insane, steady, composed, and somehow still framing the aircraft while everything is going sideways.
One of those rare “you had to see it to believe it” aviation/skydiving moments.
This is the most impossible launch moments ever captured this close
A camera sat beneath Starship’s Super Heavy booster as all 33 Raptor engines ignited at once
Inside each Raptor, methane and oxygen produce combustion gases approaching 3,000°C, or roughly 5,400°F
Then the full engine array erupts, hammering the launch mount with supersonic exhaust, violent shockwaves, extreme acoustic energy, vibration, water spray and enormous clouds of steam
Yet the camera kept recording through the entire ignition sequence from directly beneath the mount, without the view ever clouding or fogging
SpaceX team engineered a way to capture footage from the most brutal launch environments imaginable
The camera system behind this shot may be almost as impressive as the footage itself
