In many parts of Zimbabwe 🇿🇼, you have other things to worry about, but your personal safety isn’t usually one of them. You can go about your day without constantly worrying about being robbed or shot.

WHEN I USED TO SAY THIS, the retort was that Charamba wants to corrupt and control journalism. The one thing you are taught in Journalism 101 is that it is a public service, indeed a public good! In many jurisdictions, the media get public funding in many ways: direct funding by the State - not Government! - or indirect funding through numerous tax concessions especially around inputs into their production processes. More sophisticated jurisdictions give “bottom-up”support, which is to say greater support is extended to smaller, struggling fringe publications to ensure plurality of voices. Nordic countries are examples. Here State support faces aspersions from the same media and readers who think funding from foreign governments channeled through pseudo-NGOs or institutions like USAID - when it lasted - is the shibboleth of free press/media in the sense of an institution insulated from the State. You would think they don’t know which State(s) is/are behind their (N)GO benefactors! It is an ignorant view of the political economy of the communication industry. Completely illiterate and duplicitous. When we created IMPI during the ministerial tenure of Professor Jonathan Moyo, it was as if we committed an abomination by getting journalists on it, in return for very modest stipends. The result was the seminal report - the only one in the history of this country - which gauged expectations of all stakeholders on media products. It is there, gathering dust! Closer home, there was this binary between so-called PRIVATE MEDIA and GOVERNMENT MEDIA, the nomenclature deliberately deployed to imply both quality and probity. That false dichotomy created a riven and polarised media environment. Meanwhile not once did any of the so-called private media turn down advertorials from the State, which amount to 60% of media proceeds in any jurisdiction worldwide. Note once, too, did we see any private media give away media products to the public for free, while restricting income to private sector business. You don’t need to be supremely educated to know that media product sales with the public necessarily make that business public, the same way taxes are!!! Even more recent, the Office of the President and Cabinet donated two cars to two newsmen - broadcasters - who have been working on the liberation struggle beat. There was a false uproar, again centred around giving a bad name to State support. Now I see that in the wake of dearth and death of Foreign Governmental Organisation (FOGO) masquerading as NGO, our media people - journalists, trade unionists, managers and proprietors - have now woken to what in the West is a truism: that journalism is a public good which can and should be publicly funded! Welcome to the real world, Comrades!!!
One of the things very hard to do when you lead anything, I mean when you lead anything, and you want to get stuff done, is hiring people who actually GET STUFF done.
I have found that in Zimbabwe, there are plenty of educated people, and plenty more who think they are educated. But here is the kicker - THEY CAN’T get SHIT done. Some of them are like wheelbarrows. Pawarisiya ndipapo.
Strive Masiyiwa is wildly successful. He gets stuff done and seems to be good at getting people who get stuff done.
Mzaya @tawandan1 has done well in business, owns the second largest asset manager after Old Mutual. He had succeeded not because of his Masters degree in law but because he gets stuff done.
Tagwirei is successful not only just because he is smart, but when he puts his hand and mind on to something, he envisions stuff, gets it done, and he hires people who get the stuff done.
Wicknell was not an educated man. But if you listened to him, and read beyond his arrogance and braggadocio, he was not an average Joe. You just don’t wake up and start knocking at the doors of Presidents and so on. He had a skill that gave him that access. There are many people who COULD have access but they don’t have it. Highly likely, he got stuff done, without a degree or A Level education.
Even when parents look at their kids, they can see who among them is capable and can get shit done and who is incapable and can’t get much done.
Do you get stuff done!!!

I met His Excellency this morning as I headed out to Bindura, Mashonaland Central Province, for the official launch of the RIG borehole drilling equipment on behalf of President E.D. Mnangagwa, dedicated specifically to veteran-led agricultural and community projects. His Excellency continues to stand shoulder to shoulder with our war veterans in support of their welfare.

Company after company is leaving the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, and now the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange too, buying out small investors at prices that independent valuations often put well below what the businesses are worth.
Of the twelve companies that have left outright since 2020, nine, or 75 per cent, blamed the same three ills in their own circulars: prices detached from value, shares that barely trade, and the cost of a listing that can no longer raise capital. The other three, 25 per cent, fell to mergers or insolvency.
The question is: What exactly can be done to stop this delisting wave. Can Zimbabwe simply legislate to stop companies leaving the exchange?

Listen folks, don’t mistake my expression of disgust at Emmerson Mnangagwa’s looting spree for a change of my views on CAB3. For me CAB3 sorts this Zimbabwe problem when his kind of political creatures are nolonger around or they are doddering old gits. Otherwise why should we stick around with a system that has created one centre of power that will all see pillaging and plundering by use of its superior executive and political authority? We are in this mess because of that.
CAB3 retains executive presidency in that office BUT political authority will in future be in parliament. This is how collaborative governance structures work. If you don’t see this as a fundamental positive change; I am sorry I can’t help you.
Yes, the ugly side of this is that Emmerson is still sticking around for much longer, but for some us it is the future that matter. A national culture that looks at the long term is one in which society places greater value on future outcomes, continuity, patience and intergenerational progress than on immediate gratification or short-term political or economic gains.
A long-term-oriented (LTO) nation asks, “What will this decision do for our children and grandchildren?” rather than simply, “What does this do for us today?”
