Modern DeFi is on the bleeding edge, and setbacks happen. But this experience really highlights why we keep pushing so hard for Maya, and why PEX (Permissionless Exchange) matters so much more than DEX. Let's break down why this fight is worth it 👇 A standard DEX (Decentralized Exchange) often isn't as decentralized as you’d think. Many rely on centralized bridges, wrapped "fake" tokens, or admin keys. When things go wrong, they can get stuck waiting on centralized decisions, or worse, get censored entirely. Maya is a PEX (Permissionless Exchange). We’re talking native cross-chain swapping (real BTC for real ETH or CACAO). No wrapped IOUs, no middlemen bridges. Just pure code, distributed Asgard vaults, and independent node operators. In a PEX, there is no boss, no back door, and no one to "freeze" the network on a whim. So why does this matter for the future of financial freedom? True financial freedom isn't about being perfectly invisible to risk; it's about being entirely unstoppable in how we recover. When we got hit, we didn't wait for a corporate bailout, an admin override, or a centralized server reboot. The community, node operators, and devs rallied. The "Tribe" verified the data, executed a transparent on-chain migration, and safely got back to work. That is the power of a PEX. Power is held by the collective, not a centralized board. Setbacks are the price of pioneering. But every time we adapt, survive, and build back stronger on-chain, we prove that native, permissionless finance can't be killed. Thanks for hodling the line with us. Let's keep building!!

🚨 I'M GOING TO DEFEND @THORChain. After watching the Bitget discourse, reading the forensic reports, and looking at what actually happened on-chain, the selective outrage is getting ridiculous. You want to talk about “neutral infrastructure?” Fine. Let's play fair. 🧵

Laura has platformed and propagated an impressive amount of misinformation about @THORChain recently, so allow me to set the record straight. To her credit though, Laura will be having TC co-founder @CBarraford on her show on Monday, to finally provide the other side to the story. @tayvano_: “It’s not decentralized” THORChain is very unique in all of crypto. It is no surprise that Taylor does not understand it, because while it superficially very much resembles other chains and protocols, it is not actually like any of them. Perhaps the easiest way to conceptualize and understand TC is to view it as a start up, ran by a DAO, that utilizes a blockchain, to offer permissionless native cross chain swaps. TC is a Startup The thing that TC is most is a cross chain decentralized exchange - a business. TC collects a fee for allowing users to permissionless trade a native, L1 token on one chain for a token on another. Businesses, as is hopefully obvious, cannot be immutable. They must be able to adapt to the market in order to remain competitive. Thus, the TC *protocol* is NOT immutable. It is governed by a DAO. TC is a DAO TC’s ultimate decision makers are its Node Operators, which control its Nodes. They vote onchain and thereby control the functioning of the protocol. Each Node gets one equal vote. They decide what version of the chain code to adopt, and thus also determine consensus. A 2/3rds super majority of nodes can do essentially whatever they want. There are also several protocol processes that only require a simple majority to enact a change. TC utilizes a blockchain TC nodes run and validate the THORChain blockchain, which is a Cosmos tindermint chain. The TC blockchain IS immutable. Already we see how this can be tricky. The TC protocol is not immutable, but the TC blockchain is immutable - easy to confuse or conflate these two things. TC offers permissionless native cross chain swaps In addition to validating the TC blockchain, TC nodes also run full nodes for every chain that TC has integrated: $BTC, $ETH, bitcoin-cash:native, litecoin:native, $DOGE, BSC, $AVAX, $SOL, GAIA, TRON, $ZEC, BASE, and $XRP. TC Nodes are split into groups of 16-20 called Asgard vaults, and each vault forms a giant multisig (TSS) wallet to custody exogenous assets - native tokens of each of those chains in the most trust-minimized way possible. These exogenous assets are paired with TC’s native token $RUNE in k = xy swap pools to allow TC’s users to swap between real, native, L1 tokens. TC’s guiding star is permissionless swaps. It is this criterion that shaped everything else about the protocol. TC believes that permissionless money needs a permissionless market. Permissionless swaps are baked into TC’s very bones. There is nothing in the TC codebase that allows it to censor addresses or transactions. It is blind to the provenance of the funds that flow through it. How decentralized is THORChain? At the time of this writing, there are 103 active nodes (with another 15 eligible and waiting to join the active set). So 69 of them cooperating control the network. However there are Node Operators (human individuals) who run more than one node (multi-node operators, MNOs) and thus have more than one vote in the TC DAO. Due to the sybil problem, it is impossible to definitively determine how many people are required to meet that 69 node threshold. My honest guess is it’s somewhere around 20 currently. Now 20 people might not sound like that many, but again, nothing in TC is as simple as it looks like from the outside. MNOs source bond from Bond Providers, and usually have a relationship with them. A BP’s influence upon a NO is roughly equivalent to the amount of RUNE bonded. Thus, decision making is actually diffused throughout hundreds of BPs, and essentially all of them believe in permissionlessness. NOs who vote against the will of their BPs will lose that bond, which dictates how many nodes they can run. So in practice, it is the totality of RUNE holders that bond their RUNE (of which there are currently 736) that determine the choices of the protocol. Understood this way, we can see that the TC DAO is actually very decentralized, and that it is the BPs, moreso than the NOs, that truly govern the network. Additionally, TC is currently experiencing a NO explosion as numerous community members are being mentored and raised up by the experienced MNOs. MNOs are altruistically giving up their income and nodes so that TC may become more decentralized. > "It's not secure" TC, like many DeFi protocols, has suffered a few exploits and has lost money thereby. However users have always been made whole from these exploits, and no swapper has ever lost funds. > "They've reallocated assets" Taylor’s most correct and most damning allegation. TC created two poorly designed financial products, Savers and Lending (collectively known as ThorFi), that were essentially bad RUNE/BTC options and these blew up in early 2025. TC did end up confiscating user funds, but issued a preferred equity token to them with the aim of eventually making it back to them. There's no sugarcoating this, it is a huge black eye for TC. > “Code not open source” TC is open source, with the very minor exception that its TSS library (the source of its May 2026 hack) is temporarily closed source while its cryptographic security is reviewed and assured. The TSS library is expected to once again be published with the next release, 3.21. > “It’s not permissionless” TC swaps are permissionless. Protocol actions/choices are determined by consensus of the DAO, as has been discussed. > “There’s an admin key” There is not. It was deprecated in Jan 2025, right after it was used to set off the ThorFi collapse. > “Stopped the chain” Correct, the DAO stopped the chain to fix what was broken. > “The actual people behind it is dwindling to nearly zero” The exact opposite actually. As discussed above.
"They all consider themselves these cypherpunks. It's actually insulting, because it's not decentralized. It's not secure. It's not open source. It's not permissionless. It's basically the opposite of everything these guys purport to stand for." Taylor and Kain on why they think THORChain is no more decentralized than Arbitrum Kain: "THORChain has done this. They've done the Arbitrum thing. They've used the key multiple times. So they are in the same category as Arbitrum, in that they have actually done the thing and reached in and stopped the chain for their own reason." Taylor: "But they've also reallocated assets, more than once, internal to their system. So that's not just a phrase. That's seizing assets that don't belong to them, arbitrarily. Changing the balances of accounts in your system." "Right now the code is not even open source. There's some private distro channel with, I don't know, five bros in it who are running all the nodes. I would honestly say it took more people to action the Arbitrum thing than it would to action the THORChain thing. For Arbitrum to do what they did, the amount of coordination was actually hundreds of people." "THORChain always brags that it's hundreds of nodes, but that's not the case. The actual people behind it is dwindling to nearly zero, day by day." Kain: "I genuinely don't understand how someone can get on the timeline and be like, sorry man, it's just a willingness thing."

So we can now truly appreciate redundancy. And we mean redundancy in every sense of the word: for cross-chain, for our validators, and for the broader DeFi ecosystem. When a closely related codebase experiences a vulnerability, a precautionary halt is a vital feature. It’s like locking the blast doors. It gives devs the critical time needed to analyze the exploit and ensure Maya is safe from the same attack vector. 🛡️ Here is why this multi-layered redundancy is our absolute best defense: 1⃣ System redundancy: Built-in emergency brakes. Nodes collectively agreeing to halt prevents catastrophic loss. We never rely purely on perfect code, we have a mechanical backup. 2⃣ Validator redundancy: Distributing power across a wide network of independent nodes ensures that no single bad actor or single point of failure can compromise the network's consensus. 3⃣ Ecosystem redundancy: Maya Protocol existing alongside THORChain is vital. If one DeFi highway is temporarily closed for repairs, having an alternative route ensures that native cross-chain swaps can eventually continue. Security is never "finished", it is an ongoing process of learning, adapting, and reinforcing. We are monitoring the data and will only resume operations when we are 100% confident. Thank you for trusting the process. We build stronger together, tribe. 💪

MWM 146 Recap Here’s what you need to know from this week’s session 👇 Protocol updates 🍫 • The latest release is live and going through stabilization, with a few remaining items being polished. • A churn was completed successfully after a long pause. • Work on v128 is nearing completion, with Cardinal scheduled to merge soon. • Early testing and review processes are already underway as we prepare upcoming releases.🚀 Builder session with @BiorLabs We spent time discussing what it looks like to build a self-custody product in the current market, from early design decisions to long-term execution. Key topics included: • Designing UX that feels familiar to users without compromising self custody. • Building products iteratively and staying consistent through market cycles. • The realities of fundraising today and the need to remain lean and focused. • The importance of transparent communication and regular updates to maintain trust with users. Where Maya fits ⚙️ From a builder standpoint, Maya provides native cross-chain infrastructure that enables broader asset support at the wallet level. This includes assets not commonly available across other swappers, giving builders more flexibility when designing self-custody experiences. The session also touched on early ideas around rewards, referrals, and how infrastructure and interfaces can align more closely over time. 🎧 Listen to the full session here: teapawt.net/Maya_Protocol/status/2…

MWM 136 with @nativeswap_io Here is everything you need from this week’s call 🍫 What is coming in version 1.27?🌐 • Cardano grant work is complete. The next step is StageNet and final simulations • Cacao Bonding is on the way. Bonded units count as half an LP unit • Swap.thorchain.org now falls back to Maya automatically when a route pauses • Preparing for ThorChain’s January upgrade which includes CosmWasm and Rujira. Chain updates • Dash is getting Instalock for faster observation and settlement • Zcash support for sending to shielded addresses is ready for review • Kujira is being deprecated because of low volume and high resource cost NativeSwap updates 👾: Sorouv shared how the whole project started and how it grew from a simple idea into an interface doing around one million dollars in monthly volume since July. The platform lives on app.nativeswap.io and already works on mobile if you connect through Keystore. They also launched a Cacao Pool Tracker at maya.nativeswap.io where you can check your LP position and add more liquidity. Withdrawals are coming soon. Roadmap • Ledger and Trezor support • WalletConnect • A cautious review of memo less transactions • Maya and ThorChain remain the priority with better fees inside the ecosystem On stability Recent Dash and ZEC downtime came from a UTXO bug inherited from ThorChain. Maya has now moved from smoke tests to full simulation testing, so 1.27 should feel noticeably more stable moving forward.
