Highways move us between cities. City streets are for people. Dr Rutul Joshi of CEPT University: slow down to 20 to 30 km/h as we enter the city, for safer, more livable streets. #SpeedManagement #RoadSafety #SaferStreets
At the National Seminar on "Rethinking Urban Speed: Speed Management for Safer, More Livable and Inclusive Cities," DrRutul Joshi, Professor, CEPT University, highlighted the need to plan highways and city streets as two different environments.
Highways prioritise mobility between cities. Urban roads, however, need to prioritise accessibility, with transit zones, betterstreet design and easy access to public transport.
As Dr Joshi explains, speeds coming off the highway need to drop as vehicles enter the city, with operating speeds on urbanroads potentially as low as 20 to 30 km/h. Planning this transition well can enhance livability, transit access and safety foreveryone on the road.

A school zone, a busy urban street and an access-controlled highway have very different road environments - and different levels of risk.
Speed limits should be based on road type, pedestrian activity and crash risk, not simply on how much traffic a road can carry.
Adopt evidence-based speed limits that put safety at the centre of road design and mobility planning.
Because safer roads begin with safer speeds.

Road safety cannot improve on headlines alone — it improves when decisions are backed by data.
From identifying high-risk zones to strengthening enforcement and tracking progress, reliable data helps us understand where the risks are, what needs to change, and whether action is actually working.
Because when we can measure the problem, we can act on it.
Let’s move from assumptions to evidence — and from data to safer roads.

Bad road design doesn’t just slow traffic - it costs lives. Unsafe infrastructure, poor planning, and neglected roads continue to cause preventable crashes every day.
Safer roads need better policy — not just stricter fines.

Good roads don’t happen by accident - they’re designed with safety in mind.
A simple change in infrastructure can decide whether a pedestrian feels at risk… or protected. From proper crossings and traffic calming to pedestrian-first planning, road design directly impacts lives every single day.
Safe streets are not a luxury. They are a necessity. 🚸

Today, on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we honour those who have lost their lives or have been injured on our roads. In India, more than 1.7 lakh people—many of them children, cyclists, and pedestrians died in 2023 due to road crashes. These are preventable tragedies, not just accidents.
At Centre for Environment Education (CEE), we are committed to promoting safer and more sustainable mobility systems. Through partnerships in Assam, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, citizens and children are helping to build safer neighbourhoods and streets. We are also proud to collaborate with the Road Safety Network and authorities like the Gujarat Road Safety Authority to strengthen policies protecting vulnerable road users.
Let us work together to reimagine and create roads that are safe for everyone. Your support can help save lives.
