There's actually so much foreshadowing that it's unreal. It wasnt a retcon. Everyone asking why Itachi is being so sloppy and sparing everyone, Orochimaru saying Itachi is stronger than him even though he ran from Jiraiya, him knocking politely on Naruto's door to kidnap him etc.
