COVID only kills 1-2% of people but that's A LOT of people. In US, it would be about 3-5 million dead. COVID shut down the world for a year! hospitals and morgues overflowed. Remdesivir isn't a miracle drug and people usually showed up when it was too late to save them.
Every time we review a grant application, we mark if it could be 'dual use', i.e. that it might be dangerous. If US Gov and NIH want to know the answer, they usually require special biosafety actions. Sometimes the results are never published so the bad guys don't get info.
It's very difficult. First of all, when we move genes around, we don't know what the effect will be, right? we're trying to study what the gene does. Large committees at each university control what is allowed, and there's another layer of scrutiny at federal funding level.
American tax payers paid for the COVID vaccines. President, US National Institutes of Health, Congress all approved/paid for it. CDC, NIH, FDA are all tax payer supported to protect Americans. Trump, Biden, Harris are all vaccinated to protect themselves

1) Anyone can submit VAERS 2) the US Gov keeps records of all health events every year, so we can see if something goes up. The Gov very quickly found when the J & J adenovirus vaccine caused clots in women and pulled it from the market quickly. the surveillance works well

Only way you can see if a vaccine helps or causes damage is to do controlled studies where you compare treated and untreated groups to each other. Every time this has been done, #COVIDー19 vaccines are shown safe & effective. That’s why the COVID vaccines are recommended TODAY
