"Will Arabs be Israel’s kingmakers? They want Netanyahu out" They are not the only ones - but, to be fair, Israeli Arabs don't want to destroy Israel and wipe out Jews in order to achieve it. unherd.com/2026/10/will-arab… via @UnHerd

Nine Christians murdered in Jordan. No relentless sharing of their faces. None of you know their names. @bbcnews couldn't even be bothered to tell you that two more died of their wounds. An attack on Christians in Jordan does not fit their narrative. So it must be swept aside.

You wonder how people can get into responsible positions with such a lack of understanding of basic economics. He seems to be under the impression that people and businesses will pay whatever taxes are levied. They won't the rich will sail ioff to Papua New Guinea in their yachts; the less well off will be left to carry the burden and will do what they must, which will probably involve black market trading. See cigarettes for recent example.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply. Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply. Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents. dadun.unav.edu/server/api/cor… ecb.europa.eu/pub/pdf/scpwps… taxfoundation.org/blog/big-oil-p… scottishfinancialreview.com/2025/09/03/win…

A good question. Brexit gave the UK government the opportunity to set our own priorities. The opportunity has been wasted, so far, and would be removed completely if the UK rejoined the EU.
The EU's trade commissioner reiterating that the UK must make a permanent financial contribution to the EU's Social Cohesion Fund to 'reduce economic and social disparities' between EU Member States. Meanwhile, the UK is not eligible to receive any of these funds. Why is it the UK's responsibility to reduce inequalities in the EU, and why do we not direct our own money towards levelling up poorer areas of the UK first? dailymail.com/news/article-1… via @DailyMail

Hand or CNC? Three things decide it. Material: we hand spin up to 3mm in copper, aluminium, mild steel and brass, and 2mm in stainless steel. CNC goes up to 3mm in aluminium and copper, 2mm in carbon steel and 1.5mm in stainless steel, with brass also available. Shape: hand spinning goes up to 1.5m in diameter and 800mm deep. CNC spinning goes up to 650mm. Volume: for a one-off or a few parts, hand spinning can be the most cost-effective route. Precise, repeatable batches and production runs suit CNC. Capacity depends on geometry and grade. Send your drawing, material and quantity and we’ll recommend the route: excellmetalspinning.com #MetalSpinning #HandSpinning #UKManufacturing

Saw you on the train the other day. If I had realised that you needed some help with basic arithmetic, I would have offered. FYI: This is energy we would have needed and used anyway. The difference is: we get royalties & tax revenues from Jackdaw. There are also fewer air miles involved in getting it here.
We are in a climate emergency & yet the government just approved Jackdaw. As Green MPs, we've tabled an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to keep fossil fuels in the ground (including Rosebank) and to focus on things that would actually lower bills & create secure jobs.

But it's the triple lock that's the problem? – at Kensington, London
Well done shrinking private sector we’re now expected to fund a projected £60 BILLION a year in public sector pension costs! Public sector pay growth - 6.3%. Private sector pay growth -3%. Higher state pension contributions. Guaranteed, inflation linked retirement incomes. And greater job security. And millions in the private sector carry their entire weight with nothing like the perks or the security! It’s all about to fall over 💣

The Green Party have accused Andy Burnham of “climate vandalism” over approving the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea. This is disingenuous and based on ideological emotion, rather than facts. The Green Party’s “climate vandalism” accusation is pure political theatre - an emotional slogan that collapses under the weight of basic energy and economic reality. Britain will still need substantial oil and gas for decades, even on the most ambitious net-zero trajectory. Heating homes, producing goods, powering industry and providing reliable backup for intermittent renewables cannot be wished away. Approving Jackdaw - an already advanced North Sea gas field, not a brand-new licence - is a pragmatic decision to use British resources rather than import the equivalent (or more) at higher full-lifecycle emissions and with zero UK tax or jobs benefit. Burnham is absolutely right on this: maximise responsible use of existing UK reserves, protect skilled British workers and maintain energy security. That is realism grounded in facts. “Climate vandalism” is the language of people who prefer slogans to the hard economic and energy security trade-offs of keeping the lights on, homes warm, and the British economy functioning.
