This was an interesting primary, too. Abraham was running against Mitt Romney's ex-sister-in-law, Ronna Romney. Mitt backed Ronna, who was divorced from his brother Scott two years year. Former MI Gov George Romney - and Scott & Mitt's dad - backed Abraham, who narrowly won.
🧵The Republican Revolution of 1994 swept in former MI Republican Party Chair Spencer Abraham into the U.S. Senate, the first Arab American Senator elected from Michigan, and the first Republican to win a Senate seat in the state since 1972.

Probably worth a call. But would this be more newsworthy than digging up old tweets? I dunno.
Someone needs to call Michigan’s last Republican Senator, Spencer Abraham, and ask him if he’s endorsing Rogers or El-Sayed.

If elected, Abdul El-Sayed would be the 2nd U.S. Senator from Michigan who is Arab-American. The first was Spencer Abraham, a Republican elected in 1993.

Weird how this doesn't apply anywhere else ... just here. Weird.
Tips for reporters on how to interview Abdul: 1) You ask the Qs. He doesn’t. 2) When he asks you a Q, ignore him. Ask your Q again. 3) When he says, “That’s not the Q, the Q is” ignore him. Ask your Q again. 4) When he doesn’t answer, ask him why he refuses to answer. Do your damn job!

If Muslim people “get power, they’ll cut your head off as believers of Christ,” a former Southern Baptist minister reportedly said, at a Republican Party of Texas State Convention, in Houston. Recent, repeated attacks on Texas’s Muslim community have prompted fresh efforts to mobilize Muslim voters in the state. Although the group likely comprises less than two per cent of the state’s population, it could make a difference in this year’s unusually close contests. “The perception of most of the people is: ‘Red state, my vote doesn’t count,’ ” one resident said. “We have to vote,” said another. “We have to make a society where everyone respects everyone, regardless of their religion, their language, their looks, their skin, their gender.” Read Peter Slevin’s report on Texas’s Muslim voters and canvassers: newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…

Education voter divides tend to decline (& income divides increase) when elections are more about the economy than cultural issues. Dem Senate (right) & House (left) campaigns are very economic-focused this cycle, Republicans campaigns are mixed. mediaproject.wesleyan.edu/re…

Lot of fear of people lying to polls. We don't have much evidence for it & don't need it to explain error. People uncomfortable sharing their choice are more likely to be in the now ~98% of people who don't respond than to take ~20 min survey to lie. Non-response much bigger deal

More than 5 million people have lost their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits since President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill passed last year. That has meant many more people are turning to food banks for support. to.pbs.org/47Sb4rd

We are going to need CHEESECAKE FACTORY candidates. This will be the key to 2028. 1) Will you EAT at Cheesecake Factory? 2) How MUCH can you eat at Cheeecake Factory? If you're not getting an app, an entree, and dessert, don't lead my country.

Case Hall stand up!!! 🫡 💚🤍
I don’t have a horse in the U.S. Senate race but I’ve been a fan of @roxierichner since our Case Hall days at MSU & she deserves the props for how she runs a scrum. Folks see her call names & assume micromanagement, but she’s making sure local/in-state reporters get questions.

Both candidates for governor were campaigning in NYC the first weekend of early voting. While Hochul made sure to be seen with Mamdani in Dem areas, Blakeman made sure to criticize their association in more conservative parts of the 5 boroughs cityandstateny.com/politics/…
