Disability support systems were designed decades ago, and often fail to account for current living costs, modern assistive technologies, or the true expenses associated with living with a disability.

WSIB is the Workplace Safety Insurance Board and it is where yoi go when you are injured at work. For when you become disabled. The payments are small & fully deducted from ODSP, dollar for dollar. But as bad as it is, taking parts of it away will cause more chaos.

Living on ODSP? It's no secret the shelter allowance doesn't match real rent prices in many areas. We need policies that truly reflect the cost of living so that everyone can have a secure place to call home.

Calling out politicians for spending gov funds on themselves but not pointing out that they are actively starving disabled people and edging them toward homelessness whilst the politicians live in luxury. Rate the rates! ODSP & OW are legislated deep poverty. Destitution!

We have the means to provide everyone with housing, healthcare, childcare and basic income. Suffering is a policy choice. Those in power would rather hoard the wealth than see everyone equally provided for. If everyone had their basic needs met, the world would change.

How does a disabled adult get $2450.40 max per year via the federal CDB – but a child gets $8,157 max per year via the federal CCB? A child is worth 3X that of a disabled adult?? Canada has severely underfunded disability to the point of destitution, then offers MAID as an out.
The Canada Child Benefit helps 6 million children across Canada — and on Monday, it’s going up.   That means families will get up to $8,157 a year per child to help with groceries, clothing, child care. Money where it matters most.

Politicians will get a hefty salary with benefits. Then on top of that allowances for food, travel and housing. (The allowance for housing in Ontario alone is $30k/year) And they have the audacity to say that vulnerable disabled people don't deserve to meet the poverty line.

Disabled Canadians are furious. A pathetic $4.20/mo increase to the Canada Disability Benefit is a slap in the face. 🤬 Worse, most can't even access it. The gov't locked it behind the complex DTC gate, trapping thousands in deep poverty. Livable income now! #CDB #CdnPoli

Four dollars and twenty cents *maximum* per month. $4.20 That is what the Canadian federal government boasts about increasing the woefully inadequate Canada Disability Benefit by. They are advertising it as a positive, when this is a mockery of what the UN CRPD called for.
Beginning July 2026, Canada Disability Benefit recipients could receive up to $2,450 per year, an increase of approximately 2% from last year to help keep up with rising costs. Learn more 👇 Canada.ca/disability-benefit

"The question is not whether she has the right to choose death. The question, to me, is whether she was given enough reasons, resources & support to choose life." Disabled Canadians are not given support to live. This is a Hobson's choice; suffer or die montrealgazette.com/opinion/…

If you have a disability & can't participate in the workforce you will not be provided any extra funding to supplement the cost of living. You can expect starvation, homelessness & suffering from legislated abject poverty. If you can't work the government doesn't care if you live
If you have a disability, you can work and earn up to $1,000 per month without affecting your Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) income support, benefits, or eligibility.

"Designed to fail: How Ontario’s income security policies create and perpetuate homelessness  Key findings •As of July 2025, more than 30,000 people on Ontario Works (OW) and the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) were experiencing homelessness – an increase of 72 per cent since July 2019. •Homelessness among those who have relied on OW for more than one year surged by 136 per cent. •Seventy per cent of unhoused recipients are single adults – the group receiving the lowest benefits. A system designed to fail The policy brief highlights how current provincial rules act as a “preventable policy failure”: •Paltry rates vs. rising rents: OW rates for a single adult have been frozen at $733/month, even as the average cost to rent a single room in Ontario climbed to $756/month between 2019 and 2025 – making even the cheapest housing option out of reach. •Punitive shelter benefit rules: The system is split into basic needs and shelter benefits; however, if a person cannot prove housing costs, they receive zero dollars for shelter, pushing the unhoused even deeper into poverty. •Rules that force couples apart: Social assistance rules penalize family formation by reducing benefits when couples move in together. Reforming this could free up an estimated 10,000 low-income rental units." maytree.com/publications/des… #onpoli #odsp #ow

Conservatives make this point that they spent more than $800 per month on groceries. In comparison, After rent is paid disabled people nationwide are lucky if we have a hundred dollars left – and then there are utilities, medication, etc. $800/month for groceries is a dream.
DETACHED FROM REALITY Mark Carney just claimed the average FAMILY spends $800 per month on groceries or $10,000 per year. Has he gone to the grocery store? 4 steaks 🥩 is $100 only one meal If you ate BEEF 20 days a month x $100 that’s $2,000 without veggies, fruit or carbs

Can't help but feel worthless, the agoraphobia and bulimia brought on by steady and constant trauma makes my anxiety unstoppable. I'm surrounded by garbage in a sweat stained bed, my room is already getting hot and I'm dreading any future. My advocacy is one of the few things giving me purpose, trying to stop the cycle so people don't live like I did, on the streets selling my body as a teenager, no family, no stability, no treatments. In and out of shelters, sleeping under the dvp bridges, and weeks in mental hospitals when it all got to be too much. But it's been too much for anyone to handle for so long. We just wanted a chance, soemwhere to recover and be safe. Instead we are vilified and chastised for being lazy moochers. Tell you what, surviving what I've been through, there's nothing lazy about it.

Canada has led globally on advancing inclusion and accessibility to MAID for disabled people forced into poverty and/or unable to access needed supports.
This evening, I delivered Canada’s address to the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Canada has led globally on advancing inclusion and accessibility and we are fully committed to continuing this work. Because inclusion is not a privilege, it’s an expectation that every Canadian should be able to count on.

Living in poverty means constant stress over basic needs like food, shelter, and healthcare. That pressure harms mental and physical health, limits access to support, and can increase suicide risk. Poverty creates a ripple effect that touches every part of a person’s well being.
